It was nearly sunset there, more pics this weekend
339 miles of two lane, two passes and one hour (nearly) of crossing Denver traffic to get out of town came to 22.8 on the computer. I'll check it manually when I fill it this morning. Computer says I still have 70 miles to empty.

EPA numbers are always slightly high for autos (getting better though) and very low for manuals. They don't drive the cars. they check tailpipe emissions and extrapolate. The computer simulation they use for the "drive" is based on the shift points of automatics in an urban/suburban loop and its way off for the shift points and acceleration rates used by sticks

@skier , Can you please elaborate more on the M/T EPA milage estimates. I can vouch that I got way better MPG's than what was stated on the sticker (21mpg Hwy) in the 16' TRD Sport AC M/T. I was getting roughly 22-24.5mpg based on the 4.7" middle screen with the bar graph. This is when I test drove the Tacoma, before I backed out of the deal due to pricing I wasn't willing to pay. Thanks!

It was documented several years ago in a couple of the usual car mags, but the salient point was that they use the same shift points, braking points, accel on, accel off for both transmissions and don't account for extra gears. No one drives a manual exactly the same way (and the EPA doesn't drive them at all, its on a rolling road controlled by a computer

@skier, makes sense. There's hundreds of ways to shift in a manual. An Auto is set by the computer/throttle input.

I disagree with someone on the forums that basically said that shifting at very low rpms, which in turns bogs the engine down makes it actually worse mpg for the truck/car. I was living down in Peru for quite sometime, and all the taxis would always shift into 5th gear by 35-40mph or so. Granted they were diesel corolla wagons they were driving. Every time I've shifted at lower RPM/Recommended RPMS/MPH from the Owners Manual, I have always exceeded the EPA Suggested mpg in both city/highway.

I want the same thing, OR Access Cab, and would like to shoot them an Email requesting this. Do you have Toyota contact info? I've not seen it on their website.

It will really come down to terrain and driving style. If you're not trying to accelerate too much and shift early without lugging the engine I dont see the problem with the technique and can see how you can get better MPG. I think that statement will probably apply to when you are trying to get medium or more acceleration but shift too early, and although you may not be lugging the engine you end up making up for the lack of acceleration from the gear ratio/torque at that rpm by opening up the throttle more. This is what I enjoy about manuals; listening to the engine through the shifter and figuring out what I need to do for the particular situation. I've had to friends who pretty much shifted everytime the tach hit 2k because they thought going higher was bad for the engine albeit to be fair they are not car people.

It was talked about on the 3rd gen forum that the 6 spd manual off road does not come with crawl control. How much price difference compare to an auto with the same features? Would some buy one if it is about 1k less. I feel it should be priced about 3k less without the crawl control feature.

It's about $1600 less for the manual over the auto. I couldn't care less about crawl control since it means requiring a slushbox. Not to mention the fact that I don't know how they'd even implement it. If you watch the videos the trucks often come to a complete stop, albeit briefly, while crawl control is on. That would require automated control of the clutch in a m/t truck, and that's another thing that I want nothing to do with.

MPG is all about one thing.. How far you press the skinny pedal. It directly controls how much fuel is injected into the engine and thus fuel consumption. If you shift too soon and then sink your foot into the gas only to bog the engine and slowly accelerate it is easy to use more fuel at lower rpms.

I drive a 6MT and NEVER bog my engine. My particular motor was not designed to make power at low rpms so why ask it too?

Once in first I never let it go below 2k rpms and normally shift between 3-4k rpms.

I get the EPA estimates for my car and I drive it like I stole it half the time (hitting 7.5k WOT thru 1st-2nd-3rd multiple times a tank)

Your engine is more efficient if the throttle is opened wider. Shifting early is better for mileage than letting the rpms climb. The bottom line is if you accelerate fast you use more gas.

Thanks for the link adventure kid. Just sent an email asking the same thing. I'd like the option of a manual with the off road package and access cab.

Thanks, I filled out their form and requested if there's a chance of getting the manual in a AC Off Road or even SR5 later this year of for 2017 pointing out they're already being made for Canada.
