The only reason ford is number one seller is because of fleet sales...bean counters make financial decisions and ford is the cheapest deal out there. Accountants and corporate anylists make financial decisions for companies. They are punks with a sheepskin and just want to look good financially and they are driving beemers and infinities

Off road capability is a combination of a lot of variables and one of my neighbor's Audi A4 AWD was one poor off road car with 4 inches of ground clearance. The Ford Expediton we rented was equally poor off road and is primarily intended as a heavy duty over the road towing and load carrying vehicle that rivals any but only where the pavement doesn't end. My neighbor'S son would not believe the capabilities of my old Sidekick until I left his Wrangler stuck in a mud filled ditch when he tried to follow me off road over the skidder trails by our houses. I had to go home, get my tractor and pull him out. So, all 4 wd are not created equal.

That's part of the decison making. Regardless, even amoung the average consumer looking for a truck, the F150 will have all the appearance of a better truck value then a Tundra given the more advanced technology it employs . We may favor reliability, but for the lease it crowd who rolls vehicles over every 3-5 years, reliability is not the same issue as it is for a long time truck owner. Ford makes a better decison in the eyes of these people.

Ram is actually the cheapest option by about 2K on any truck. Trust me. I work in operations at an Agricultural Retail. You can buy Ram to be cheap, and Ford to have something that will run most of the time no matter how hard someone shit kicks their work truck. A few locations at our company have learned that the hard way.

Depends what you qualify as offroad. In the Agricultural work environment, which is primarily off road, nothing drives, hauls, and tows like a Ford. Nothing goes above and beyond in field like a Ford.

I love my Tacoma for field scouting in tight places and running tight trails, but get out in the open and the F150 has Toyota beat handily. You just have to select the right tool for the job, and for any real towing, hauling, or working on a farm with one truck I'd never choose the Tacoma or Tundra. As someone else said, you can have an XL (base trim) Ford with the biggest engine they make, skid plates and the locking rear end for under 30K... that truck will do just about anything you need to at a hell of a cheap price and it'll do it over and over again.

Yeah, I kinda would. The Outback also has skidplates, standard AWD, and 8.7 inches of ground clearance. Not saying "hardcore" offroad, but yeah, they cater to the offroad market.

See when I think Outback (and Forester, and XV) I think the perfect car camping vehicle. Big enough for you, your girl, and your dog to get away for the weekend. Enough ground clearance to travel down fire roads without worrying about most obstacles on it, and can get you to that spot in the state forest that is off the beaten path that you from exploring side roads.

But I also dont consider that offroading.

Having wheeled my daily driver, I won't be doing it again. I'll buy a sxs or an old, non plated jeep/truck that WHEN (not if) something goes bad I can fix it on my own time and still have a reliable way to and from work. Base model Tundra or F150 will be my next truck. I don't need all the fancy crap like nav and fake chrome so I'm not going to pay for it. Just your basic truck that can tow a trailer comfortably, which means the Tacoma is out.

    Looks like a rallycross course.

One of the biggest cars in Rallycross right now is the front wheel drive Ford Fiesta ST.

    So, there's that.

Yeah that look beast when i see the fiestas rolling around. Would rather have a subí though b/c beach driving.

Many people are hoping the new xv comes with either a turbo'd engine or the sti drivetrain.

and over seas it actually has a diesel engine iirc.

But neither of those are on topic so back to Tacoma vs twins :p

I have a 14 Outback, and am not one to push my vehicles to the point of breaking. I would use it for exactly what you described. However, some people have posted videos of their Outbacks doing some pretty surprising offroading in stock form. Here are some videos on another forum of a dude followimg a Jeep on some pretty gnarly roads.

Look and see how many 10+ year old chevy's with 100K+ miles you can find, and if you DO find any, ask the owner for a list of all the parts they've changed, my 1998 Tacoma is still running just as strong as the day I bought it, has 200K miles and no engine or transmission issues, no h20 pump or alternator or starter replaced. only thing I replaced on that was the radiator and brake pads, it's 17 years old, can you say 17 years old chevy?

Every single GM we have ever owned... Not to mention hundreds of thousands of GM owners can. So?

GM is notorious for building bullet proof drive trains (that is why they are the go to replacement for motorsports, used in the boating world and any where else you can imagine). Their interiors back in the day maybe rattling and cracked but they drove just fine with regular maintenance.

Cars.com has 2 Toyota's listed with over 100k with in 500 miles, Chevy has 7. Autotrader has 1,442 Chevy vehicles for sale with over 200k miles on it (I went to page 13 to verify), Toyota has 578 (same 500 mile search radius).

I have a buddy who only buys Toyota and never had a problem, I also know people who have had craptastic Toyota's and won't touch them again, ditto with GM. It is the internet, everyone know someone who can vouch for their argument regardless of how much water it does or does not hold. Thanks for your scientific research though!

Our GM's kept destroying Transfer Cases. We used to be almost all GM at work 10 years ago. Now we are almost all Ford. I wouldn't call GM's bulletproof.

Ask a Colorado or H3 owner about the front end of their trucks after wheeling too. I know a few guys through an offroad club that have to change out a pile of front end crap every 30K because the truck can't handle the abuse offroad.

Our families 1999 Landcruiser which has been primarily driven by a now grandmother (my mom) has had more issues than our families 2005 Sierra CCSB turbo diesel 4x4. You don't even wanna know what that trucks been through. That very same craptastic GM towed the Landcruiser back 750 miles in 100F+ degree heat after it broke down. All the passengers, all the gear, scaled near 20k but whatever. I'm about to crack open my 1994 Toyota and do alot of engine work that shouldn't have to happen after only 92k miles, not as trouble free as I had hoped. Every brand has issues, some models of cars are worse than others but let's not pretend Toyota is invincible, unbreakable, and doesn't require any maintenance at all.

Let's just turn the fanboy volume down a little.

Yes. A Tacoma double cab is still a lot lighter than an F150 double cab.
