    Never say never....

Oh, and by the way, I traded a Hemi Ram 2500 on the Tacoma I'm driving now. I still have a small mountain of spent parts laying on the garage floor.

The motor was the best thing the truck had to offer other than the fact keeping it full of gas was like filling a swimming pool. Many front end parts, I bought brake pads by the dozen, and THREE air conditioning evaporator coils in 10 years.

Ram does not equal reliability. Just ask any Ram owner. Like myself. POS truck.

I am not going to make any guesses .
There are to many variables involved to diagnose over a keyboard with the information that was given to us .
What we do know ? the trans was a little low on fluid and suddenly the op fealt a clunk .Now the truck surges in forward and reverse works ok ?
How can anyone possibly diagnose this over a keyboard with the information provided ?
He is doing the right thing by taking it to a professional shop for a proper diagnostic .
Until then we wait for the outcome . Once a professional diagnosis has been determined , he can post up their findings and we can go from there

Sorry to hear OP mine is running fine for now, knock on wood. 120K miles
Mtn, that transmission is the A750E which is the 5AT, built for the 4runner V8 I believe. The 6MT is not known to be as reliable, but I have not heard of failures in either.

Can we define being "hard" on it? Mine does not shift smooth as butter, but has no issues, again knock on wood. I do mash the pedal every once in a while, but not often at all.

Fair enough. I only linked you in because your experience may of seen something jump out from the information he provided. I'm hoping Op has a good resolution after visiting the shop :).

Yah !! I hope its just a small issue as well . With this said , we can only request the op comes back to this post and replies with what the shop determines .
We could guess the SLT solenoid failed but that would be jumping the gun.
We need to know what the scanner says .
His description of the problem is not common among the Aisn Warner transmission series . Low on fluid , all the time but a clunk issue ...not too common . It will be nice to hear what the trans shop comes back with .
Thanks for linking me Sterdog !!!!
I am interested in the outcome ,

First month of ownership... This month I'm removing front air dam, and also Rhino lining the bed.
Sure. Being "hard" on the transmission to me means...

    1. Having a Super Charger

    2. Installed 1000+ pounds of extra weight (fiberglass shell, 1/8" plate front/rear bumpers, warn winch, hi-lift jack, jack stands, extra 7gal fuel can, oversized 10plyBFG KO tires, custom OME suspension, winter recovery gear, etc)

    3. Pull a 3000 wet weight trailer camping about 2x a month in the nice weather.

    4. Load tons of gear on winter trips with roof carrier, bike racks (I'll be driving to Arizona twice this winter, 3k miles per trip)

    5. Daily driver in city stop-go traffic

    6. Old house under pretty much constant home improvement. Always hauling retaining wall bricks, floor tiling, 100s of 4x4x8 posts for fencing, etc.

Basically "hard" to me means really using the truck on a regular basis as a truck.

Okay, I get what you're saying. I was thinking more along the lines of accelerating. I have <100 lbs extra weight and tow hardly (anymore). Got any pics of your truck or a build thread?? Sounds like one hell of a setup!

Thanks for your kind words. Really it's a pretty moderate setup. Suited for dirt forest roads and the beach and snow. It suits me and like all of us I love my Tacoma and want it to last and last.

Oh come on, OP's truck is prerrunner with a known problem (leaking rear transmission seal) IF op knew fluid was low it may have gotten to a point that it was way to low for transmission to handle.
If anybody has a pre-runner it should have a habit of checking rear transmission seal for leaks.

not being sarcastic so bear with me...... is the two wheel drive pre-runner transmission different then the 4x4? I would think not but maybe I'm stupid?

Transfer case is bolted to the 4x4 and the 2 wheel drive has a slip yoke with a driveshaft . Other than that , same trans as long as its a 4 litre

I beleive Blue T was talking about this tsb
"A750E Transmission Extension Housing Seal Service Tip" TSB-0173-09
Introduction: "The extension housing oil seal for the 2WD A750E (5-speed rear wheel drive automatic transmission has been changed in production to a double-lip seal. Use the current part number in this bullentin anytime the extension housing oil seal is replaced on 2WD A750E transmissions."
Previous Part Number 90311-40001, Current Part Number 90311-40034, Part Name: Seal, Type T Oil.

The tail section is different. The 4X4 versions has a surface to bolt the transfer case to. The 4x2 version goes straight to the driveshaft.

Adding yours and the OP's, that would make (4) that I have heard of in all my time here on TW. It would seem it's quite rare, IMO. Extremely reliable considering how complex the device is.

OP: Keep us posted on your outcome, and sorry for your loss if it's $$$$ mechanical trouble.

Yes, instead of transfer case bolting to the end of the transmission Toyota put some kind of weird extension for it, and thats where fluid leaks. Its been known issue for some time.

Info on difference between A750F and A750E
