FIXED!.. I think ;) Need help chasing down sudden rough idle!

I don't believe we have egrs on the v6 CA or not.

I keep doing the same! I was doing valve covers etc last weekend and kept wondering why my engine looked so different lol.

 

How do you have it searchable? I've got the fsm downloaded from when it was on ttora but there's no way to search. All the PDFs are abbreviated so you have to know what it's under to find it.

Looking at the FSM, it states: To prevent deterioration, do not clean the throttle position sensor and IAC valve.

I cleaned the IAC completely at time I cleaned TB. Others have too. Hope I didn't mess it up.

 

When I did mine, I took the IAC off and only gently cleaned the soot in the air channels. I did not spray a ton of stuff in there, and I did not crack open the green case. I think I used a rag and a q-tip soaked in TB cleaner, IIRC. I had zero problems. How agressive were you?

I went to town on mine. I took off the green (solenoid?) and shot it all out. I've read others do the same on other websites and no one came back with issues. I'm not ruling it out though. Anything is suspect at this point. I just know it ran like silk right after the TB and IAC cleaning.

I followed a write up for my model truck that step by step described the total cleaning of the IAC.

 

I imagine a problem with the IAC would likely throw a code. But I don't know for sure.

Yeah you'd think it would. I don't think erasing the catalytic converter code I mentioned earlier would prevent new codes from appearing, right? The biggest clues so far to me are that after the TB/IAC cleaning, it ran smooth. Rough idle only became the norm after I continued to feel stumble after TB/IAC cleaning, pulled the plugs, found a blackened/loose plug, replaced with proper plugs = boom, rough idle, yet - no more stumble.

The old plugs by the way were pretty worn but still ran smooth until this occasional stumble, likely cause was the loose spark plug.

Another big clue I feel is the cooler weather temperature/smoother idle situation.

It's from a 3rd gen 4runner. 2001 to be exact, 6 cylinder.

I know a lot of the parts between the first gen taquitos and the 3 gen runners are interchangeable.

When you cleaned the MAF, did you just spray off the little bulb at the end, or did you spray down in the tube. I did the former, then was informed that you need to do the latter, too.

 

I've actually done it twice. First, when I had the catalytic converter code, but only shot the bulb. In chasing this rough idle, I did it again but shot the bulb and down the tube this time.
