Hi folks, Gary (aka) Whammo here. Was prompted to post a note of introduction...here goes, I've been a Toyota owner/driver for years, yeah I'm elderly as my co-workers would say but hey. Doesn't taking a sweet off road trip in a Tacoma keep you young?!? H#%% yes it does. I'm driving an 08 access cab 4x4 w/the 2.7 & 5-speed. Gets me there AND back. Mileage is better than my old 74 Landcruiser plus I can carry more "stuff" and less people they need their own Taco if they want to come along ...real interested in the 2016's and may go that route, so I'll be reading a lot of posts & doing homework in that regard. I welcome any discussion/ thoughts on the subject.
My son drives a 2015 DC V6 4x4 his first new vehicle, his previous was a 99 Tacoma....
So there ya go, Cheers, Whammo

Totally agree, first mod I did was remove the back seats and put a storage box/dog platform in mine.

    Welcome, from Canada's Yukon

    Yukon Yak,
Thanks for the welcome...say great idea(s). My dog would no doubt rather have a "platform" and I can see that being way safer for her and me. I do a fair amount of back country travel to fly fish and I can imagine some sweet storage (and secure) drawers under it too.....hummmmmmm winter project maybe. I'm in New England so I welcome indoor (read garage) projects during the winter.
Did you purchase yours commercially or do your own build?
    Thanks again,
    Gary

    Gary,

As promised, the hatches I purchased from Cabelas, 3/4 plywood for the box treated with ez-liner, I also placed a vent in the front bottom to allow air to circulate a bit as I stuff fly fishing gear in there. for the width I made it so that the seat one click away from back the passenger allows the seat to fully recline for my co-pilot.

If I had to do it again I would have made it a few inches taller, I've even thought that getting a small fridge and placing it in one half of the platform would be an option.

    Cheers

    Denis

    Denis,
This is an excellent repurpose for the "access area." Right, as a fly fisher myself I can totally appreciate air flow-Oh yeah! Thanks so much for sharing, I'm going to give my access area some real thought into customization. Thanks for the tip regarding Cabelas too. I wouldn't have thought to go there, obviously I'll need too!
Again, thanks so much for sharing!
    Beers & a burger...I'm buying
    Gary
