I have a question for those that have their tent mounted over their cabs.

I'm looking at buying a cab rack for my truck. While
I have no plans of adding a RTT at the moment I'd like the option of mounting one in the future incase I decide to go that route.

With that being said I'm trying to decide on different styles of racks.
Can you use a basket style rack or do you need a rack that is completly flat for the tent to flip open?

The reason I ask is because racks like the Gobi stealth and ranger racks state they can support a rooftop tent but the racks have basket side bars that look lt would interfere with the tent opening?

Would any of these work with a RTT?

Or would I be limited to something like that Bajarack utility rack?

I don't like the look of the Prinsu.

Right now it's between a Gobi or Bajarack. I'm leaning towards the Bajarack as the price of the Gobi is pretty ridiculous.

I think @ffdawson has his tent mounted on a baja utility rack, the one in the last picture you posted

Personally if you plan on taking it on and off.. I would get an aluminum rack.. Sliding it on my Baja rack I had took the powder coat off and it rusted

I was unsure of how the hinge works on most RTT's. I guess you need a flat surface for it to open properly.

I guess my other option would be to mount it to the top of my mid rise cap. I have an ARE MX series with Yakima crossbars. Although there seems to be a lot of mixed information on this site on whether or not most
canopies can support the weight of a RTT. The mid rise cap would also put the tent at a somewhat awkward height.

Agree with the above, powder coat is useless with an RTT

I haven't looked into the FR rack much besides a few pictures. After doing some research I'm really
    digging the Frontrunner Slimline II

well certainly check your hold down nuts and bolts. mine stayed well mounted to my aluminum rack for a 800 mile trip. The REAL issue for me is the tent's hinge joints and ladder bracket bolts do not stay tight after a little rough washboard or rougher boulder strewn trails. I even checked and tightened prior to the trip. On my Tepui, the main hinge joint comes apart when the hinge nut comes off. fortunately the nut is contained inside the cover. I'm wondering if it is the action of opening and closing the tent that makes the nut come loose, rather than just a rough road.

I plan to check everything over tmrw, cause it's raining still, supposed to be sunny gonna air out the tent and clean it. Although when I set up camp Saturday night after 3 hrs of rough trail everything was still tight

I use wing nuts to mount my rtt to my bed bars.. The locking nuts kept striping until the bolt would snap..

The front runner racks are great. In pretty sure all of the accessories are interchangeable between the FR and the prinsu racks. The FR RTT mounts are clutch I have never had any issues with it back in off or coming loose even after extensive wheeling.

THIS. after my nyloc nuts fell off twice, losing one nut entirely and the other hiding in the cover I got pissed off, pulled all the hinge hardware off and drowned everything in loctite. No idea why, but it appears that a select few of us have this issue constantly while most people have no problem. Maybe we got the batch with the limp handed Chinese dude in the factory that day.

But its an easy fix in the end even if the nuts do disappear. Everything else about mine has kicked ass from day one .
