Ditto on that. Looks like a Tundra for me as well instead of a Gen 3. Unless Toyota drops the 4.6 in the Tacoma in 2018 to regain sales lost to GM....

I'm at the dealership now (2011 in for possible shock replacement) and they let me drive the sales managers 2016 TRDORSB.....WOW! Feels entirely different than my 2011. Only drove about 5 miles...observations.

    • Felt higher off the ground
    • Much quieter interior
    • Much tighter fit & finish
    • Engine seemed plenty powerful to me....seemed like a more consistent power band throughout the gears & acceleration
    • Interior ergonomics & instruments seemed intuitive
    • Wish they came with some mud flaps (similar to size & shape of Husky's on my 2011)
    • The step tubes that come with them seem cheap....I'd most likely replace with OEM running boards for door ding & dirt/rock chip protection
    • Soft tailgate drop is very nice
Although it shares many components as 2nd Gen.....the changes are significant enough to really make it seem like an entirely different truck.

When the time's right, I wouldn't hesitate at all to pull the trigger on one.

Just my opinion on this brief experience.

I agree. probably the best gen3 thread to date.

I was never in the "ugly grill" camp. I like the gen3 Tacoma. And pretty much figured I may get one at some point. But seeing the one I would want (DCSB TRDOR) is 40K loaded up...I'll probably be in a Silverado or F-150 next time I buy. :notsure:

Awesome review!! I work in the Sienna Plant and I love that fact that you showed pictures of the truck disassembled. Not everyone gets to see what is under the pretty garnishes.
I ordered my new Tacoma a couple of weeks ago, with a hefty discount of course :) You have got me so excited to get it!!
I got a white TRD off road with the upgraded luxury package. Blind spot, sunroof, smartkey, heated seats ect.
I originally orderd the quicksand but chickened out and changed to white. I hate black interiors and that was the only option in the tan color.
    thanks again

I'm surprised at the gas mileage. I would have expected better. Nice looking Taco. Congrats.

Hey, Just read your write up.
Is your sunroof issue fully resolved now? I'm ordering a '16 Tacoma and I'm torn on getting the sunroof. I don't really care for sunroofs to begin with but I like the rest of the tech package. But if that thing had the chance of leaking water on you I would have to steer clear. I plan to keep the truck for a very long time. The sunroof in my wife's corolla leaks water if it rains SUPER hard. Have you had much rain or leaks since you bought your truck? I'm hoping the sunroof will be very reliable.

Yes it's resolved. No leaking that I have seen in hard rain and I checked closely while driving. Didn't feel any water coming in. I did notice that the air dryer at the car wash pushes the sunroof down a little. Let a few drops in but nothing to worry about.

Not sure what 2nd gens look like. There's a pic floating around somewhere of the 3rd gens but I don't have one at the moment.

Is it me, or do those OR wheels look bad ass covered in mud? Makes me want to lighten mine up a bit...maybe a graphite instead of the black.

    Hey Mike,

After only two weeks I caved and joined the KO club. Pretty happy so far...little bit more noise, but not much. Not sure I would have liked the GY tires over the winter.

Nice. Have you noticed a huge MPG drop? I'm probably going to have the dealer install the 265/75/16 KO2's when I pick up my truck. I have KO's on my current truck; they are great in snow when new.

Too early to tell. Buy I assume it's will stay about the same (17.5 to 18.5 with mixed driving) judging from Mike's input.

What is the dealer quoting you on those tires? Wonder how it compares to going to a place like Discount Tire and doing yourself.

I haven't talked to the dealer yet. I should have negotiated that when I ordered the truck, but I was hopeful that the OEM TRD OR tires would do well off road. Mike's review was more than enough for me to decide to switch to KO2's (or something similar) immediately upon taking delivery.

4 wheel parts had a great deal last night; $146 shipped per tire for 265/75/16 KO2's. I was tempted to order a set, but I figured I'd talk to the dealer first. I've seen similar sales from 4wheel parts in the past:

I noticed I was getting 16mpg with the ko2's running 35psi (cold) and ect always off. Now I pushed them to 40psi cold and ect on and I've been getting 19mpg. I'm also coming from sporty vehicles so I'm used to better throttle response and felt like I was being too soft with ect off. The is all at sea level by the way.
