Some minor engine problems

So...

Driving home from UVM (I live ~20 mins away) I stopped at a red light for a short bit. When I put the truck in gear and went to accelerate, the truck started shaking and the CEL came on immediately. I guessed there was a cylinder out of commission so i went to a parts store and ran the code.
It came back as cylinder 2 misfire, so i bought new plugs, drove home, and installed them.

That did solve the problem for the rest of the day, however, now when the truck warms up and idles it does so erratically, going from ~800-500 and back. When I am trying to accelerate from lower RPMs, the truck also pauses and jumps as if to catch back up. I reset the CEL and it has not come back on since.

I noticed that the wires were worn out a little as well, so i have purchased those and am going to install them when they arrive. The rotor and dst cap seemed ok, but will need replacing sometime soon.


My question is: will that fix this problem or is there something else I am missing?

Yep. Replace all of those items. I have the same vintage truck and more than once it has done exactly what you mentioned. The cap, rotor, and wires wear out in these things about every 50,000 miles.

 

Most likely its your wires. With your wires worn out the spark is going to the engine instead of the plug.

 

Get the Toyota wires too. I've bought 2 aftermarket sets ( autolite and some other brand) and they sucked. The boots break too easily. The Toyota ones are a lot more durable.

Since Denso is OEM for toyota, i bought those.

 

I double and triple checked my gapping skills, but they are probably not absolutely perfect. I got it as close as possible.


On a side note, I also noticed that the old plugs did not show anything beyond normal wear (no overheating, deposits, etc) so it is probably not anything internal. Just seems to be the spark trying to get to the cylinder.

did that and didnt see any, however, when i inspected the wires as each plug was pulled, i noticed serious damage on wire 3 and minor damage on 1. That's why i am replacing them.

 

so i will install the wires when they arrive tomorrow, but if it doesnt solve it ill come back here and ask for suggestions again...

 

Ok, so the wires came today (FINALLY...couldnt drive her all last week and the weekend, I hated it). I replaced all four in the parking lot with a Leatherman and socket wrench by pulling off the distributor cap to access the clips that hold the wire ends onto the cap.

And...She runs like a charm again!!
