Yes it's hard to trust what you hear online. I see the f150 kind of like an iPhone - it doesn't matter what the new one looks like or is made of, people will buy it. It's the truck of the masses. With that you get buyers who might treat vehicles like an appliance rather than a prized possession like an enthusiast would - like many forum members would. So I expect to see some crazy reports for that reason.

Yes, they're the most common factor, the control, which is what I called them. So... which side do you believe?

Regardless, if one person runs through 3 fords or dodges then lands a Toyota and runs trouble free, does that mean nothing to you? Now if the Toyota fails too, it COULD be the driver himself, or a bad truck from each manufacturer or 4 bad manufacturers. The point is, the correlation is there. Ask sterdog (I think that's who it is) about his dodge.

Yes it is more significant when multiple drivers have the same problem than when one customer has many - but that's a bit of a straw man argument by implying that there is only one or the other. That's not always the case and the QDR of each manufacturer does not have its reputation based on a bunch of flukes. I'm not saying Toyota is the best thing since sliced bread but in the past, their QDR has shown moreso than most manufacturers in most cases. Keyword past.

Three weeks ago I traded in my old truck and bought a 2012 Tacoma DCSB Sport. Can't really give you an honest opinion on how I like it because my gf seems to have taken it over, lol. So here is where I am at, thinking about trading in my second car and don't really want two Tacoma's so after reading this thread thinking about a 2015 or 2016 F-150 6cyl turbo. I am not in any big hurry so planning on Dec or Jan to see what I can save on a 2015. It will be a SCREW 4x4. The question I have here is which Ford F-150 forum do you guys go to if or when you go to a Ford forum ? The ones I am finding are nothing like this site !! Not putting down Tacoma's at all and do like the one I just got but new truck will be replacing a Tahoe I use to tow a 20' enclosed 4 place snowmobile trailer so want something a bit bigger. Really want more reviews on the 3.5 turbo motor from real people that have them. Thanks for and help and Tacoma is going nowhere, gf and I both love it.

We do everything at our local shop 15 miles away that we can and everything that we can't we have done by independent mechanics locally on off warranty vehicles. Ford does do the maintenance on our trucks when it comes to spark plugs, sensors, and any other crap that aftermarket seems to be poorer quality. Our Ford dealer has supported us fully even with that all being said even though we only use him for most things on warranty.

I will say the biggest thing with the 5.4 L NA and the 3.5 L Ecoboost is keeping up with the sever maintenance schedule. Every time I hear of an Ecoboost with Turbo issues or a 5.4 L with VVT problems extended OCI's were involved or the person decided to go out to Fords light duty maintenance schedule . The light duty, or normal, OCI and maintenance schedule is based off the truck basically never being below freezing temperatures or above 80 f ambient temperatures. Oh, and no towing or loading either. It was conceived to appease the same people that came up with the crappy WS Tacoma transmission fluid I'm sure.

Regardless... If you have the same owner that maintains their cars as per the manual and nothing more then you can make a case that it's a controlled test. If they baby one and not the other then it isn't fair.

Ford and Dodge are not where near the same in quality IMHO. In my experience you can't keep a Ram in one piece.

As far as people having 3 bad Fords in a row you are definitely exaggerating. Ford has had very good QDR for the last decade and the exact same argument could be used against Toyota in regards to their frames, which actually happened unlike what you are talking about with Ford.

Both Ford and Toyota are very good trucks. I'd suggest there is far more bias here and from you based on the name than on the actual quality of the product on the road.

    :notsure:

Are you suggesting our fleet is babied because we do the proper OCI's and maintenance as described in the manual? If your work is not following the extreme duty OCI and maintenance schedule then they are not following the proper schedule for the vehicles they are running. IMHO that makes you to blame for any issues you are having.

In the field the last thing our truck are is babied. Check my pictures. That F250 from a few months back in buried to the frame and had to be hauled out by a 4WD tractor. That's just a normal spring day for a truck at our place when we need to get shit done. That's a 2011 F250 IIRC. 6.2 L gas. 252K and no issues at all.

I'm missing your point. Lots of people followed Toyota's maintenance schedule and now need new frames, but those two things have nothing to do with each other. Toyota just cheaped out on their frames. This argument could go round and round but it doesn't make Toyota superior in any way.

@Sterdog No sorry I went back to the other topic about taking advice and experiences from individual people factoring how they treat their cars. I do take other people's opinion and experiences as a factor when buying a truck. My uncle swears that his 2014 F150 is the best thing ever and that's mainly why I'm following this thread, despite other friends who've had bad experiences with F150 and my own bad Ford experience.

It's just hard for me to trust people 100%. So just because someone says they have been through 3 Fords and 1 Toyota doesn't mean that much to me without really knowing context. People's habits in caring for their vehicles could have changed. Some vehicles handle abuses better than others as well. My SIL went 35k miles before her first oil change on her Honda. Most cars would be in big trouble by then. She got lucky, I don't think it was because the Honda was all that much better.

While I do listen to what people have to say, I just take it with a grain of salt.

Yeah, in general I only listen to people who I know personally have owned or worked the truck. I take the internet preachers with a grain of salt because I don't have any way of knowing how truthful they are being. There are a ton of people too who will knock a brand just for childish personal reasons that have nothing to do with the reliability or capabilities of a vehicle.

Maybe see if you can find someone you know and trust that works operation for a company that owns a lot of trucks. If they are like our company, odds are they know a lot about what works and what doesn't IRL and will have some records to back it up.

The frame issues worry me. But I do believe Toyota has fixed this issue and if not they will make it right. It comes down to individual experiences. I'll take my chances with a 3rd gen Tacoma (maybe next year) based on my own experience with Toyota and keep a close eye on how the 14-15 Fords are doing into next year. I've had a Ford Explorer and a Dodge Caliber ... both were crap as far as interior quality goes and also had electric problems. Mechanically the Ford gave me problems besides electrical. But I know the F150 is treated on a higher level of quality by Ford so we'll see.

Bolded QFT. As long as Toyota keeps up what they've been doing the frame issue is more annoying than a real issue. I worry things aren't any better because their frames are still made in the same place, just by another company.

How old was the Explorer. My parents have a 2014 that my mom puts huge mileage on that she loves. The mpg's are pretty meh, but otherwise it's a nice car. The early 2000's Explorer earned the name the exploder for a reason though TBH.

I didn't claim Ford and Dodge were the same quality.

Nor did I say I knew anyone who had been through 3 Fords, that was an arbitrary example. I understand that example implies Toyota>Dodge>Ford but like I said I just threw a manufacturer and number out there. I use Toyota as the "current" vehicle of example owner because this is where people end up. No one starts a tw account for their new Dodge.

The purpose of my post was not to assign QDR ranks to manufacturer. The purpose of my post was to illustrate the fact that you can't disregard quality reports just because one motor company has more vehicles on the road than another. I gave an example to contrast that method is all.

As for frames, the frame recall doesn't bother me as much as it bothers everyone else. It's a part that was flawed from an outside fabricator used in the Tacoma. Toyota also replaced also lot of frames for free because of it. That bothers me much less than if my truck has a track record of the engine blowing up or transmission failing. What do you mean unlike what I'm talking about with Ford? What did I claim happened to Ford trucks?

As for bias, yes I agree there is a lot of bias on this forum because people are partial to their trucks. I see where you're coming from in regard to my post, but understand that, like I've stated, that was a random example to contrast what pack con said. So I'd have to reject the notion that there is "far more bias from me based on a name than on actual quality"

We've had 3 Fords and 2 Toyotas. The first and current Ford are running fine. The second was an f250 that had to get towed back home from the deer lease once the engine blew, can't remember specific diagnosis. The first Toyota was not in the family long enough to tell if it would have had problems. My current Toyota has no problems at 120k miles knock on wood.

To throw this whole bias business off my name I'll say that if I chose a new Tacoma over a new Ford it would be for the styling, especially at the price they're asking. I don't think I want to off road a brand new truck either. Please don't lump me in with those claiming the Tacoma is a better truck than an F150 because I've made no such comment and that debate itself has so many variables I don't even like to try and define it.

It was a 2004 with under 100k miles. Ball joints had to be replaced multiple times (all street driving) and there was a rough idle that 2 mechanics couldn't figure out. Lots of other minor repairs that added up over my short time with it.

Also to your point about personal petty reasons to not like a car company...

Another forum I was in refuse to buy ford because they are made by a union workforce and stick with Toyota (non-union). Some people I know only buy ford because they are union made. While I have a strong opinion on this... it's a huge purchase and I wont let that be a deciding factor. I know Toyota pays their assembly line workers well which is why those workers don't push for a union. If they treated them like shit and constantly fought against unions, then I'd raise an eyebrow. It's like how some Costcos are not union while others are. The non-union Costcos are keeping their wages up with the union Costco and sometimes offer better perks.

That's just an example of what I've been reading around the wonderful internet world.

It's all good. My point was directed because the conversation seemed to be slipping towards opinion and theoreticals more than what's happening on the road.

QDR wise it's very hard to tell what's actually going on. Every company that tries to report QDR ends up being sponsored by the manufacturers unequally or, even worse some times, at the hands of a few select individuals who don't have a clue (I'm looking at you Consumer Reports).

The frame thing is all over the place IMHO. Honestly it worries me. I'm fluid filming my Tacoma this fall. I've never done that on a truck before and my frames always lasted at least 10 years, but I feel I can't take the risk on that Toyota. To me that's no different than having a transmission that need extra time consuming work or other things of that nature. It's all annoying and on the fault of the company that put that truck on the road, again all in my humble opinion.

Of course there is bias here. It's TACOMAworld lol. However, just by the evenness of the voting here, you can tell something is wrong with the current Tacoma. It overlaps too much with the bigger trucks and that's going to keep costing Toyota market share if they don't do something about this pricing IMHO. Then again, maybe Toyota would be happy at these prices selling 60% of the trucks. Who knows.

The F250 diesel was a disaster until the last new engine they released. The Navistar Powerstroke, if that's the engine the truck had, was an unparalleled disaster in my opinion in the F250, but going off what you said about Toyota frames, why don't you blame international for that? I mean, it is an international motor that Ford simply contracted out...

Yeah, the whole where it's made and who made it thing matters and it doesn't. It depends on the person. I personally feel a grudge against Ram and GM for moving truck production to Mexico and still advertising their trucks as American when Ford has worked hard to keep the truck plants in the USA. Then again, Ford isn't free of the lure of Mexico either. Neither is Toyota. It's all over the place. Mexican quality is all over the place, some manufacturers make vehicles in Mexico and have no troubles. Others not so much.

Personally I hate unions but it comes from my personal experiences with them while I was a PT worker. I paid huge dues, sometimes 10% of my cheque, and when I needed them to help me fight a health claim that lead to me leaving the company the union was no where to be found. IMHO some modern Unions are worse than the management they are trying to protect the average worker from. At least management pays and cares in my experence, Unions in my experience take and don't give two shits on the problems one guy is having. That all doesn't mean I don't respect what Unions should be and have been in the past to help my current non union position be better.

    No, it's Ford's fault.

It's the maker of the Toyota's frame's fault for the Tacoma frame rust.

    Get it right, geeze.
