Now begins the long wait for November, when the nine remaining players will take their seats at the 2009 WSOP Main Event final table. Day 8 capped off an exciting week in grand style. Phil Ivey, one of the most feared and recognizable poker players in the world, will be one of the nine final tablists, which is an absolute boon for poker and for ESPN’s coverage. It will be a pleasure to watch Ivey play in these conditions, and even though he enters the final table with a limited stack of chips, counting him out would be a huge mistake.

The final table should be dominated by the massive chipleader Darvin Moon, who’s been at the top of the board for the last couple days. Here are chip counts and final table seating arrangements:

    Seat 1: Darvin Moon - 58,930,000
    Seat 2: James Akenhead - 6,800,000
    Seat 3: Phil Ivey - 9,765,000
    Seat 4: Kevin Schaffel - 12,390,000
    Seat 5: Steven Begleiter - 29,885,000
    Seat 6: Eric Buchman - 34,800,000
    Seat 7: Joe Cada - 13,215,000
    Seat 8: Antoine Saout - 9,500,000
    Seat 9: Jeff Shulman - 19,580,000

I don't understand the format of the main event. They play the bulk of the event all at once and then wait to play the final table? Kind of like the playoffs in other sports?

That's how it works...I believe they do this to allow the final players to get their sponsors
