Did everyone else only get one key for the tailgate?

Looks like they are non transponder keys and copies can be easily/cheaply made at the local hardware store.

Yep, I only got one from the dealer. However, the next day I had two copies made at the local hardware store for less than $5.

Okay awesome, glad you can confirm this too. Just wanted the info out there so someone doesn't get duped into paying a little extra for the transponder version.

Doesn't the key within the Fob work for the tailgate too?

Does Toyota have a code for these keys so they can be remade?

I can't find the code, but they are the basic toyota key before they integrated the transponder. Any hardware store should carry it for a few bucks.

Haha that was my first thought! I've gotta get down to the hardware store ASAP. It'd be shame to have to pay a locksmith to come out for something so simple.

You mean to tell me that Toyota used a ignition key compatible lock barrel on the gate, but didn't pin code it to match the truck key?

Buy a BOLT technology barrel and shove it in there. One key fits all, problem solved.

Question: If you get the SR or SR5 (they don't have the keyless drive option), does the ignition key then also work with the tailgate, or do you then get 2 different keys?

Yes - I have a manual tranny and NO remote start and my key works the tailgate and the ignition. Same key yet another reason for going with the M/T.

No, the FOB key is the newer laser cut variety. lame that they cheaped out. It also does not lock/unlock with the power door locks. There is thread already showing how to add a generic $6 universal lock actuator going if you'd rather do that or do that in addition to spending $2.50 on a spare key.

But the hardware store can't make you a more one once it's worn out

Read somewhere that tailgate key fits nicely in the lid of center console where it looks to be a pen holder. Great idea, hate for wife to go to Town and not able to open... Got the bed cover:locked:

I just purchased a 2016 Tacoma TRD Sport and I installed a hard shell tonneau cover. I can't find the key to the tailgate. Is there a place where the dealer would hide the key in the truck? I'm going on a long road trip and need that tailgate locked.
