Newbie here and hoping this is the right place to post...

Trying to figure out what is fair pricing for used 2nd gens. They seem to really keep their value but I also don't want to spend more than I should.

I am looking to go through a dealer as they were able to approve some good rates and the truck I am looking at is a 2006 double cab 4x4 off road with 144k miles. They are asking just under 22k. That's higher than private party but... is that a fair dealer price?

Anything helps and I appreciate the time!

For a just a bit more you can get a brand new one. Used Tacomas are great if you are selling, but pricey if you are buying.

To me that seems high for that amount of mileage, I bought mine 3 years ago for that price but it only had 19,000 miles on it. I think the best thing to do for comparing prices is just look at auto trader and look at toyota's certified online site for average prices in your area. As for new vs used, I guess some people could look at a $10,000 difference and think "not that much" while others will look at that as the clear cut off between buying and not buying. I'm guessing payments for a new vs used would probably be at least $100 more per month, maybe 2 or 3 times that depending.

    What boogie said ^ .

Tacoma is one of the very few vehicles I advocate buying new.

There is quite literally NO WAY you should spend 22,000 plus tax and fees on a Tacoma with 144,000 miles.

Not to derail the thread, but if you are shopping rates, then I assume you know all your FICOs. If a dealer can get you a good rate, you can get a good rate on private party. In addition, your new car rate from the dealer should be better than the used.

I capped my price point at $20K for a used one. That brought in a lot of old, and high mileage ones. However, I scored with a 2011 w/ 142k miles, access cab, and 4x4 for $15k. I can see two more 11's in the southeast with those specs for $17,500 -18,000.

144k miles at $22,000. Too much. I paid $31,000 for a brand new TRD Sport 4x4.

Here's another way to look at this. $22,000 at 3% for 5 years would be $395/month. At 20,000 miles/year the truck would have 244,000 miles when paid off.

$31,000 at 3% for 6 years would be $471. At 20,000 miles/year that would be 120,000 miles at the end of the loan.

Buying new in this situation is a much better decision. Only $75 more a month for a brand new no mileage non 8 year old truck.

I don't know where you are located but in Atlanta you can do much, much better than that. Looking at Auto Trader in Atlanta are, you can get a 4X4 V6 DC with less than 100K for under 20K. Or I saw a 2010 4X4 V6 DC with with 54K for 22K.
And of course these prices are negotiable. But I would buy new if I could. More bang for your buck.

To echo everyone else, absolutely not. You may as well look towards new when getting around that price point.

We'd all be happy to help you shop around. The great thing about where you're located is that you have TONS of cities within driving distance where you can drive to get a deal.

I just bought a brand new '15 with 0 miles for right around $24k - it's a PreRunner, so 2WD, and generally pretty spartan concerning the creature comforts, but it does me just fine. The point is that you can do so much better with that amount of money.

Do NOT consider that. In fact I'm trying to truly decide if this is a level of sorts...

Assuming its not a level, my honest recommendation is find a way to buy new, and do it through a different dealer. Even if that dealer were to help you buy a new one at a decent price, they don't deserve your business since they tried raping you.

I just bought a new 2015 DCSB SR5 just under $30K. Mind you, I shopped around and was willing to drive 250 miles, but I negotiated trade and final price sight unseen and have zero regrets. I suggest using the Cars.com app or car gurus app, search with a larger radius and see what you can come up with.

If you are gonna go used, again use those apps, and also auto trader app to search a large area. I like using the apps for easy sorting and filtering options. I personally wouldn't have a dealer search for me. I one time entertained a dealer searching for me and when i went in to view all their finds, none had prices. When i asked to see the prices they said they werent allowed to show me that side of the transaction. I politely declined the discussions, left, and never went back.

Oh, and I think the True Car app now does used price analysis as well. Used to just be for buying new.

    Good luck!

i paid just a few K more than that for my 2010 off road with 41,000 miles. Thats too much for the truck your looking at.
