It's cheaper right now. Historically it's not. This winter by Christmas Diesel will be more than gas. Happens every year and stays that way for ~6 months.

I don't see them bringing the International version here, they'll do the same as GM and Toyota, it will be a watered down version. Or I am guessing a Uni-Body based off the Transit Connect.

We had the 3L TDI in our 2011 Touareg. Same towing capacity as the Taco, except it does 0-60 mph over a second faster and got 30+ mpg on the highway (averaged 26 mpg over the 3 yrs we owned it). Torque for days; engine never seemed like it was trying, even while towing. We spent $36 total on DEF, and sold it at 80k miles (to get a Sienna=more space) without having any issues. The initial cost ended up being irrelevant, because the cost of the TDI option did not depreciate one iota (used value was almost exactly the price of the TDI option over comparable gas models).

This type of engine is really perfect for the way most people use trucks. I'm really curious to watch the success of the 2.8L diesel in the twins.

That vehicle was purchased 1 year old CPO; VWs are not good candidates for leasing (low residuals, except the Golf R). We don't make vehicle buying decisions based on anecdotal "conventional wisdom" about repair frequency/costs; for 99% of people, depreciation is the overriding driver of vehicle ownership cost. It's why I like diesels, Toyotas, and leasing (to lock in depreciation downside risk). Give me all three in one vehicle (ok, add manual transmission for four), and I'd be in heaven.

My neighbor growing up had a diesel, manual Toyota pickup (1980ish vintage). Thing got 40+ MPG and is probably still running somewhere. I regret every day not trying to buy it from him.

We shall see. I don't think they'd do a unibody truck as a Ranger. Last time they talked about it they were going to call it the F100 and give it most of the F150 options and engines but on a sportier sales pitch. That was never going to sell.

meh, normally where I am in ontario throughout the summer it hovers around 98c-102 in the summer and up to 119in the winter. considering how much gas fluctuates its actually cheaper at times in the winter.

I will admit as much as I love diesel, having it in the winter is a bitch.

All international trucks look the same. The market dictates the look. Kind of like how the Altima, Camry, etc etc all look the sameish.

Winter Diesel sucks. We run some heavy equipment in the winter. The people who think there is no difference between winter and summer Diesel clearly have no clue.

    .... not with those wheels.

I'm not sure why companies are so focused on ruining mid-size trucks. The new Taco is pretty good looking on the outside, but the Colorado, Canyon, and this new Ranger are ugly as all hell.

06 Jetta TDI, I have had no problems that can be blamed on manufacture. Blown turbo and clutch issues are due to modifications not VW.

I have 216000km on it, still no check engine light.

VW has this terrible rep for being garbage, if you actually take care of it they are great reliable cars. The problem is being german and having everything all tightly built into each other, its expensive to repair when something does go wrong.

Like any car truthfully, if you do not take care of it then you're to blame when stuff goes wrong.
I had someone tell me they had transmission issues with a DSG trans on a VW saying it was shit after 200 000km, I asked if he ever did the DSG service and said no. When you're supposed to do a DSG fluid flush every 50 000km and make it to 200k then run into problems thats your fault not VW.

Its the case with any vehicle. If you do not actually do the proper preventative maintenance that is not the makers fault thats yours.
That being said, yes the cost of maintenance is more but its not unknown, and something you should know before you buy any vehicle.

my issue I tend to have a lot especialy in february is getting stuck at work. I can plug my car in at home no problem but at work I cant.

These things DO NOT like to start in the cold. And since diesel has a lower ignition temp and lower exhaust temp and burn temp, they take god damn forever to heat up. unless you're doing highway driving and putting the engine under some good load it wont even heat up past 60 degrees.
In the winter I can watch my thermostat go down as I sit at a red light. No broken stat I had it checked. It just does not operate at as high a temperature as a gasser.

I often need to go out to my car at morning break and lunch and just let it run to keep the oil from turning to a sludge in the cold.

The market is there for the mid-size. I always thought a mini-me Raptor would be a good seller for those that cant afford the absurd price of a full sized one. Give Toyota some good old competition, and I think we would see real innovation in the future.

not even just for price, even overall use.

I have no need for a full size. I just need more space. But I wouldn't be doing any heavy hauling or loading the bed with so much weight that I would need a full sized.

The most I need is being able to move some sheets of drywall from home depot to my home or loading up a few coils of wire without having my back end start rubbing like I get with my car. Its actually stupid they don't offer more midsize trucks. For those that need it more for personal and weekend use they're way more practical than owning a full size.
