Actually watched a knife making competition on TV - Forged in Fire - I think was the name. There was a Damascus competition and some had uneven layers. Take 1 piece and wrap another piece around it. Then you have 3 layers and so on

But you still end up with an even amount of layers.. 3-6-12-24-48-96-etc.

The only reason to have a dissimilar metal of a single layer (that I can think of) would be for the flat side of a chisel ground blade, but that doesn't apply as it isn't a chisel grind.

I'm not a knife maker, just watched a few guys on TV that seemed to know what they were doing. Once you get the 3 layers, wrap 1 piece around it you get 5 then 7, 9, 11...

    Actually I don't think that's right either.

Damascus gets its layers and strength by folding itself over and hammering it, folding it again and hammering it, over and over again.

So every time it gets folded and hammered it doubles in layers, so you would always end up with an even number of layers again, unless you forge welded a single layer on. I don't know if Damascus is produced by stacking layers and hammer forging as opposed to the fold and hammer method. I would think not?

3 layers plus one layer wrapped makes 5, but then that doubles to 10, then to 20, then 40.

Not super entertaining. I was more interested in seeing the techniques especially since most of the knives were make by recycling other materials

:notsure: I think it aired on the History Channel, might be able to watch it online. If I remember right most of them forge welded the steel and didn't bend it. Only one guy bent it by hand

Could be San Mai damascus. Center steel is something very hard, and obviously thicker, and then Damascus layers around it for looks.

True. There are a lot of Damascus styles, I could be way oversimplifying it.

I haven't posted a pic in awhile. Many of these look like case queens, but they all get pocket time believe it or not.

Some Rick Hinderers! Top to bottom: eklipse flat dark earth scale, XM18 3.5" skinner with my favorite green scale, MX18 3" wharncliffe with blue, and a grail Rick Hinderer custom 3" wharncliffe with carbon fiber scale.

Some Mick Striders! Top to bottom again, MSF NSN, MSC tanto DGG, A pair of SJ75s, and another of my grails Mick Strider custom full stealth CC PT.

Some Zero Tolerance goodness for @Konaborne :p
    Top to bottom, ZT0200, ZT0300, ZT0562CF, Limited edition ZT0454 :D and another limited ZT0392BWBRZ.

Benchmade. Wife and daughters mini griptillians with my small tritium beads, benchmade 32 mini morpho, 9100 auto stryker, mini griptillian with OD handle.

Some other cool knives, Lionsteel SR1 with Nichols Damascus blade and monoblok titanium handle, custom Jake Hoback A8 (grail :D), Chris Reeves sebenza with custom Kingdom Armory handles, Robert Carter F16 midtech, Tony Nichols EDC tanto.

And a couple of big boys, ADV tactical butcher, and another of my grails, a Direware full ti Solo recurve.

Cases are pelican with Nalpak knife inserts. I have some other cool knives laying around, but too lazy to gather them all...

Yeah, its pretty bad when the benchmades are the "cheap" knives of the group :(

Knife porn at it's finest right here. Love the inserts for the Pelican cases. Great idea and would solve my storage and organization issues with my collection.

    154CM blade steel?

Benchmade has a history of improper heat treat to 154CM.. usually shows up in their fixed blades when they snap in use, repeatedly. I know a guy who has gone through 4 with regular use (non abusive), all replaced under warranty, but at that point who cares, I don't think he uses it anymore.
