Toyota will have it all figured out by the 4th gen. I know they will. I have confidence.

With this kind of design regression, we can probably expect front drum brakes on gen4 tacomas

Ford diesels (6.0, 6.4, and I believe 7.3) use this style of filter, but those are mounted on the top of the engine, when ford put the filter at the bottom of the block on the 6.7's they went to the standard style filter, the filter for the 6.7 is massive, before installation you need to pour at least 1/2 quart of oil into the filter then install.

I think Cadillac might use this style filter. At least my Olds intrigue with 3.5L shortstar has this type of filter.

There is an excess oil release hole with a drain tube. I did not include all the photos as I am going to write up the oil change procedure as a DIY.

Seriously! This new set up looks as bad as changing the oil in my wife's Subaru. Your about guaranteed to be wearing some, and cleaning it off the floor when done. I'll take the 4.0 setup any day.

At my dealership the replacement filter is $7 which is cheap compared to other brands elsewhere. Purolator @Walmart is $11 here.

I changed the oil in my Porsche Boxster this afternoon. It has a cartridge filter also. Its a real pain in the ass. Always spill oil every time. Toyota had a great set up on the 4L too bad they didn't stick to what works.

Toyota wants you to make a mess and get tired of doing it yourself. The fewer people who change their own oil, the more money dealers make. And those quick change places like Jiffy Lube where I will NEVER take my vehicle.

I know this setup is new to most of you Taco guys....but Toyota uses this setup on many engines and has for years....the 2GR, AR, ZR engines to name some. The first application of it was way back in 2004 in the 2GR powered '05 Avalon. The 2GR has always used this filter setup and the gen-3 Taco uses a version of the 2GR....so, nothing new.

It's not that bad once you do it. I've been doing them for years on a RAV4 and Prius in the family.

terrible. how are aftermarket filter makers gonna upsell us now. if I pay $4 for my 2011 filter, these cartridges should be 50 cents each.

I agree with you. It's one more way to get more people back at the dealership.

A little of this and a little of that.
Backwards engineering. Making it tougher for the consumer/user to DIY.
