I am just wondering if this may be related to the new low viscosity multigrade oils used in most modern engines. If the truck wasn't under full factory warranty, I would suggest trying a straight 40w or 50w and see if this alleviates the problem. Just to emphasize...do not do this yourself, unless you wan't to void your warranty.

I don't think so. These engines are designed to run 5w/0w-20.

    I would not do that.

Well, it was just a thought. In my old shade tree mechanic days I fixed low oil pressure problems on worn out motors with straight 50w racing oil. Kept them running for awhile.

You are absolutely right...I wouldn't do it either. I would make the dealer fix it under warranty, and not do anything to void the warranty. Just thought it might be used as a diagnostic tool under controlled circumstances, by the dealer if they are open to suggestions.

Yeah....with you on that one. I ran 20w-50 in my '86 B2000 late spring thru early fall because the ol' girl was a bit tired and seems to like it. But the tolerences on these modern engines are razor tight.

    Whole thing just sounds like
    1. Bad pressure sensor
    2. Bad oil level sensor (I think this engine has both since the gauge cluster has indicators for each)
more than likely it is something like that since this is the first we've heard and those types of components do occasionally go bad or get hooked up wrong

Here's my .02 again. He states it only happens on an incline so explain what oil pressure electrical issue only occurs on an incline consistently. The pressure switch or sensor wouldn't only fail on an incline consistently it would show up other times as well, it's obviously showing a consistent problem related to incline. He also stated that the dealer was able to duplicate the condition the second visit and they are looking at oil pressure not low oil. I think this will be easily tested put it on an incline and install mechanical pressure gauge in place of oil pressure switch or sensor and see if it has normal oil pressure or not. I think the people talking about a true oil pressure problem have a genuine point, who here would want an engine that's had this problem? I hope it's not the case for you and I think people are just trying to warn you not being pessimistic.

Exactly....no mechanical pressure=real problem. Well put. The incline situation appears to be the defining characteristic of this problem. I would hazard a guess, and as suggested by another member, the oil pump may be losing its prime. This may be due to some combination of low viscosity and angle resulting in a drain down.
In some ways, I am reminded of trying to set up 4 barrel Holleys with floats to operate at extreme inclines, or trying to prime old diesels with injector pumps.

Unless there really is a low oil level sensor and he just needs to add half a quart... (just saying... wouldnt it be nice if that's all it was?)

There is a warning for low oil pressure and another for low oil level. We have to assume OP is getting the low oil pressure warning and not the low oil level warning but he has not confirmed. But yeah, being a little low on oil would be the simplest explanation. Not sure if that low oil level would trigger a CIL that needs to be cleared though.

I sure hope someone already checked the oil level at this point, so I don't think it's just low on oil.
On my first Toyota pick up in 1981 it had similar problem when climbing steep hills it would loose oil pressure . It turned out to be a drain back problem , some oil return holes were to small and the oil would stay up in the top of the motor and not return to the pan. I'm not saying that's it with this but it's a new motor so it might have growing pains.

What percent of incline does one need to be on to replicate situation? Mine is suppose to arrive next week and I'm wondering if I should take it out on a test drive and find a hill before I take it.

What plant was it built at?

Saw the other thread about a problem with issues on an 18% decline.

Hope you get an answer soon.

Took my truck in Friday morning. Still don't have it back. Called this morning and the guy said they were checking oil pressures and running everything by Toyota. He said they would call when they had more information. The truck never stopped running. The engine never made any noise or indicated any problem other than the oil pressure warning followed by the cel light. I have no idea what is going on and don't think they do either. It is very frustrating but at least it happened under warranty. I haven't even put gas in it yet. Thanks for all the info. I'll post on here when they give me a definitive answer.

I feel your pain. I had to give them my truck for 2 days while they were checking out my BSM error. It was brutally painful to drive around a corolla after having a taste of my Tacoma for a week. I think that was the worst part :)
