my sales rep advised me when filling the gas tank not to top off. once it shuts off not to keep filling, click, click etc. says if you do that gas will back flow into some kind of canister and will be hard to start or may not start. he even called me at home because he was not sure if he had told me. anyone else been told that.

I've been told this as well. It's not specific to Tacomas.

I always fill mine up a lot more after the shut off  never had issues and I've done it on just about every single fill up of every vehicle I've owned

This is standard for every vehicle, not just the Tacoma. It is the evap charcoal canister that is there to trap fuel vapors. Flooding it with fuel by overfilling would defeat the device. Worst case it has to be replaced.

By overfilling you will force raw gas into the charcoal canister and it will not work as it is designed to, it will throw off your emissions and turn on the check engine light. This is true to all late model vehicles. Often times the canister will then need to be replaced$$$. jut my .02

it applies to all vehicles. You shouldn't keep going.
That said I have talked to mechanics about it, if you keep going just to get it to a round number say adding an extra .20 or so its not a problem. But dont be trying to pump an extra $1 or $2 into it.

    Just for the evap canister.

Which can bring in the Check Engine Light.

I'm thinking an extra click is fine based on pump variations and the fact that I always do one more click to make sure the pump didn't shut off prematurely. I've never had any problems, but I'm not guaranteeing your truck won't blow up and roll into a busload of orphans if you do the same thing.

I think the real problem comes in if you keep filling it well beyond the first click-off or two.

Don't fill the gas tank, either. The fluid will expand more than the plastic of the gas tank. It will overflow when it heats up

I've always wondered why people "top it off" it's not like you get another 50 miles out of it, maybe like what 2. It doesn't make sense especially if the manufacturer says not to, though I doubt a bit will hurt it, but why?

I always go after it first clicks off, so many gas nozzles click off early most the time I can easily fit another gallon if not more in. Not all the time but a lot

I'm surprised there's people that have never heard this.

I was getting gas a couple days ago, and this guy literally spent about 2 minutes just hitting the click over and over again. I wanted to go over and back hand him.

This is more of a problem in hot conditions where the fuel is more likely to expand into the evap canister. Don't top it off. Even says so in the manual that nobody reads.

That damn pesky manual. If only toyota would invest more in the truck than that damn book.

Some like to "top off" by trying to get to the nearest nickle / dime / dollar to avoid pennies.

I've never heard of it...... and I've done it in the past on other vehicles, and never had a problems.

I don't do it now only because I have a Scanguage and that affects the readings/accuracy.

I can verify that overfilling will damage the charcoal canister to the point where it will blow crap into the fuel system. It happened on my wife's POS Kia and cost me over 1,500 to fix. BUT, this never happened on ANY other vehicle I have owned and none of my friends have had this issue. I mentioned this to the service manager at Ford (I used to own a Ranger) and he said that never happened to any Ford he has serviced in 25 years. PLUS many Kia models are prone to this problem. My wife's car wasn't one of the problematic models, so I took it up the butt.
Moral of my story, yes you can damage by overfilling, but only if the vehicle is a badly designed Korean junker. As always, your mileage may vary :)
