Simple fact is oil is like gas, religion and politics. Everyone believes what they believe. They ALL think they know what's right or best. Do what you do and let others do as they do

A little of this and a little of that.
I believe oil change interval is covered in the owners manual.

There's a separate 'Warranty & Maintenance Guide' manual provided that list the maintenance required and at what mileage. My dealership told me to take my 2016 SR5 in every 5 months for the first 2 years for scheduled maintenance since it's covered under your maintenance warranty.

When I bought my 2012 (and got my 2 years of ToyotaCare), I noticed on the window sticker that they had a 4 month "expiration" on the oil (synthetic). I took my truck in every 4 months for a free oil change, most of the time it had maybe 1-2k on the oil!!! It wasn't until I had come to that dealership 4 times that they finally said, "We are going to extend your oil service life". I acted shocked and said "How can you do that?". Needless to say at my 23rd month and 29/30 days, I got another free oil change :)

Pretty sure Toyota, along with all the other auto companies, wouldn't tell you to do it every 7,500 or 10,000 miles if it was going to make them look bad. Broken down cars at 100k because of worn out engines does not a great reputation make. Their millions of dollars of R & D along with their full time engineers on tap telling me 7500 or 10k is someone I would believe over internet warriors. Besides... oil and the engines themselves aren't the same stuff it was when you grew up changing it every 2500 miles in your 78' Ford pickup.

Honda has been doing this for years also. Before my wife bought her acura, she had a V6 accord coupe that had an interval of 8000 miles on conventional. That was regular 10-30. The acura has an interval of 8000 on synthetic, but its 0-20 which is a very thin oil. It runs almost like water when pouring it.

I don't see why anyone would do anything besides what the manual says... Seems obvious.

My current car is every 3750 miles and that's what I do.

    I'd change a Taco's oil every year since I probably won't hit 10k in a year.

It actually says that the 5k service is more of a checkup than an oil change. If you don't do any of the "extreme conditions" they list in the manual they don't actually want you to change it until 10k. That seems crazy to me.

I believe you have to factor in your climate, in addition to your driving habits. Florida heat and humidity almost certainly change oil duration.

Toyota maintenance states 5K or 6 months which ever comes first, or 10K or 12 months for oil changes.
The 5K is for additional maintenance. So use the additional maintenance schedule of 5K or 6 months.

I currently drive less than 7K per year. So I do changes every 6 months. Most of the time I only had between 2-3K on miles.

Seems the oil change interval is a non issue.

My husband's last vehicle was an Acura and I think his was 7500. He has a new Infinity now. To be honest, I never paid attention to his vehicles. Toyota trucks have been 5,000 miles for 20 years...along with other vehicles I've owned.

It's just hard to comprehend when you've been doing the same thing since you were 16.

Besides that... I took a different job that's about 50% closer to where I live. I was used to putting 10k miles in a year ( 2 oil changes). Now? Holy crap... I went almost 8 months before I realized I still had 1000 miles until my next oil change (5k). Strange. ....I'd definitely change once a year atleast.

SAME HERE! My sales rep said 10k since its fully synthetic. But the person doing my paper work said its 5k since the Tacoma is the only car/truck that still uses convention oil.

Have you figured out which one is true?

Lol go back to your 1st gen forums you jelly troll.

You call someone an idiot for making a recommendation about oil, then you go on to say to do what you want lol.

2015 4cyl is synthetic change every 5 k miles. 6cyl is conventional change every 5k.
2016 im not 100% sure but i think its 4cyl synthetic change every 10k miles.

frs is synthetic with 7500k oil and all other toyotas with 0-20 synthetic is oil change every 10k miles.

toyota has been doing synthetic oil for past 5 years, 10k miles for oil change, there are plenty of cars that followed that guide and have over 200k miles on it, off bulk oil no issues.

toyota charge $50-$70 for synthetic oil changes and say you can go 10K miles on oil(except tacoma and frs). thats not bad cuz valvoline, good year, sears whatever...will charge you $70-$100 for synthetic and make you change every 5k miles.

back in the day, it was hard to trust dealers and safer to go to small shops. now i feel like its the opposite. small shops are getting sloppy and starting to charge what dealers charge except they use junk aftermarket parts and rarely get things fix right the first time. dealers are fighting back, they are offering repairs done right with genuine oem parts but are trying to be competitive with pricing. it may still cost more to get repairs done at dealers in some situations, but spending that extra up front will save you a lot of aggravation and money in the future.

me. regardless of what oil i use, i try to do my oil change every 3-5k miles. thats just my personal preference
