Icon 1.5" AAL reviews

I want to purchase the 1.5" icon AAL to replace my rear "block" lift. What does everyone think of the AAL, is it a true 1.5 lift? is it a pain in the ass to install? what do you guys think. I heard some people get this and there all rusty before the even use them. I need some feed back please.

 

I installed the Icon AAL's yesterday. Not really difficult. but there are some things to consider. I couldn't get my brake line bracket on the sprint clamp bracket and the hole is too small for the supplied bolts so I'm going to have to drill it out a bit and figure out how to keep the break line from being too tight. Otherwise the install went smoothly for being my first lift install.

You'll need a 22mm deep socket for the ubolt nuts, the center pin is 14mm, and a clamp (i used a wood clamp) to keep the pack together while you loosen the center pin and remove the stock over-load spring.

The ride feels like stock to me, didn't really notice anything different other than a bit of vibration from the front icon coilover install, probably due to needing to get my alignment done now. Why AAL and not block?

 

I bought an Icon Stage 2 that came with the AAL's, and came from stock. I'm not a suspension expert so can't really give you details of why one's better over the other, but I've read a lot about axle wrap with blocks:

btw, I'm assuming you meant the 1.5" AAL not the 1.5' AAL .. can't comment on an 18" lift

 

lol yea. I just want to keep my 1.5 inch lift in the rear but I heard good things about the AAL. I was looking at the icon one from toytec.

 

I installed the belstien 5100's aswell.

 

I've had them on 2 different Tacomas. You really can't beat it for the price. I'll never run blocks again.

 

You have the icon AAL 1.5 inch lift? Zero drama with them?

 

No drama. The e-brake cable bracket didn't fit on the new setup and required some modification, but no big deal. I don't haul heavy loads very often and don't tow with the truck so they work great for me.

I have the Wheeler's 1.5" progressive AAL (w/5100s), which is essentially the same thing without the Icon price tag. It gave me 2" with the factory overload leaf (1.5" with the overload removed). The ride is stiffer than stock, in a good way. My rear end was bouncy with the factory springs and shocks, but is firm and planted with the AAL and 5100s. Load handling has also improved.

I'm getting the wheelers version as well. It is the same thing as YotaDan confirmed for me.

 

So I am thinking of going 2.5 up front and want it to be level in the back. So I want to add the Icon 1.5 AAL in the back so overload in or out to be level?

 

I'll take a picture of mine without overload springs in a few minutes...give you an idea. But I have a plate bumper, so might not help you if you don't have one. I'm tempted to add them back but want to wait until I get the winch on to see how it settles out.

Mine were all heavily rusted between each leaf when I got them, had to strip with a wire wheel and paint. Also I have that issue with the pack clamp not really clearing the fuel tank mount. But as far as the ride and height, they're good. I'll prolly get a new pack eventually, but for now, they work.
