Both the engine and 6-speed auto trans are "new" for Tacomas, so it could be either, or some resonance "coupling" of the two.

Wonder if they fixed the front diff bearing wear issue...

I test drove a Sport, Limited and SR5. I felt a drive train vibration harmonics noise when I drove the Sport. Didn't feel it in the gas petal. It was definitively a drive train deal. I commented about this when I wrote a review in the thread I started called "My test drive Offer and Purchase" It's funny how the powers that be locked the thread because I dared to criticize the mighty Gen 3. My advise to OP is to have it looked at. But I doubt they will do anything. Its new, its a Tacoma, There's no way it can have problems.

There will always be parts of a vehicle that vibrate at certain rpm due to harmonics. It is impossible to design away completely due to so many parts/panels/etc. The main thing is that in a good design it shouldn't happen at a wide band of rpms. Also, it shouldn't happen at a very common operating band. If it does, there can usually be some kind of specific damping to relieve it once the specific vibrating part is located (insulation, rubber grommets, etc).

Definitely would describe it as a foot massager, harmonic-type vibe that only happens when driving--not in neutral or park--which means it's probably the trans as others suggest. It does occur in ECT mode also. I do have an update. Took it to the dealer's service department this weekend. The technician rode with me and noticed the issue on the pedal and floorboard. They inspected it, pulled another Sport that just arrived off the truck, took that for a brief test drive in the lot, and said they felt the same issue. So they "suspect" it's normal operation. I couldn't test drive the one that came off the truck, because it was sold, and they didn't have another Sport. But they did have an Off-Road and let me take it for a long test drive. Interestingly, the Off-Road didn't have the vibe. Was very smooth. Dealer couldn't explain why and said they could only troubleshoot to similar models (i.e., the Sport).

In any event, I appreciate the helpful responses and reassurances.

consistent doesn't = normal. I felt it/heard it immediately during my test drive. It would absolutely drive me nuts if I had to experience that every drive. TRD and Sport have the same engine and tranny. TRD don't have that problem. They got to figure out what the Sport has that none the rest has to figure out what the culprit is. Because even if it is "normal" it's not something I won't to live with for the next 10 years.

Isn't the rear differential different in the Sport vs the OR?? The differential size and possibly even the gearing is slightly different as well. I have the manual trans and don't notice the vibration.

Maybe the problem lies in the transfer case. Someone with a Sport 4wd that have the vibration go for a ride in 4wd and see if there is any change. Then of course report your findings.

I went for a ride in my Sport and tried 4wd Hi and Lo. Unfortunately, the vibs remained. I tried every combo of 4WD, S mode, and ECT mode and so far the vibs persist.

Bummer, I can't remember from the test drive, does the vibration/noise track along with rpms?

Went and paid some attention to this... it's definitely harmonic from the engine at certain RPM's

Vibration tracks exactly between 2,000-2,200 RPMs in any gear on the automatic.

I think you need to give the truck time. I had a very slight wheel drone between 30-50 It has dropped from 40-45 then goes away. I thought it was tires but its not. Took it in to document it. Tech said it was too faint to pinpoint so I will monitor it. But the truck has 124 miles so things have to set in. We are extremely sensitive to things when bought new.

I am told that the vibration is really being generated by the hood scoop. I will swap hoods with you so that the vibration goes away :)

Does it happen when it is near Chevy Colorado? Maybe it is growling and telling it "I want my 100% market share back b@#$% so hit the skids!"

I'm not sure but I think I know the vibration you are talking about now that you point it out. Mine is between 3-3500 rpms - DCLBOR

It feel like it is only there when the transmission is working hard vs coasting. I'll pay more attention for a few days. It is weird b/c of the drive by wire - not sure whet to think of it. FWIW when I was in the dealer on Friday they asked my if I had noticed it - said they had only seen/heard about it on Sports so far. He asked me to pay attention. Mtn States Toyota in Denver.

[fixed heard to be heard about it - you can not hear this vib]

Reading this thread made me go from lurker to contributor.

I bought a SR5 double cab short bed last week. It has a behavior that may be similar to what you are experiencing - but I can detect it in the steering wheel as well. I'd call it more of a hesitation - and assumed it had something to do with the new motor scheme, or the control system "learning". For me, it is when cruising at low RPMs, or trying to slowly increase speed from the low RPM range, it just feels choppy. When I get on the gas pedal a little more, it goes away. Anyway, I don't think the behavior is limited to the Sport. I have about 330 miles driven so far in 8 days of ownership.

If it continues much longer, I'll probably take it in and have the service folks take a ride with me.

FYI - Service dept. called me last week and said corporate folks were out, drove two more Sport 4x4s off the delivery truck, felt the issue, and opened a case with corporate HQ. They didn’t have anything much to say beyond that. Drove another DLCB OR 4x4 this weekend and didn’t feel any issues—was a beautifully smooth ride. I'm still putting miles on my Sport and, so far, it's still a pretty rough vib in the pedal at 2,000-2,200 RPMs in all gears.

I've noticed a similar pattern in my dcsb or, vibration in steering wheel at low rpm and low speed cruising. It goes away quickly at higher rpm and speeds. I only have 150 miles and was hoping the break in would solve the issue. Fingers crossed, but this doesn't sound good with all these reports.
