The above picture is the best I've gotten so far. I live in Texas, it's pretty flat, but most highways are 65-70 mph. 2krpms isn't the most economical

Ehhh I'm willing to bet that most, if not all, of the votes for 15mpg are from the jelly trolls who don't even own one

I've only burnt about a third of a tank and I'm is sitting at 18.9. Probably 90% of my driving has been around town.

With the different drive trains it makes no sense to have a combined poll.

Driving 4 x 4 TRD OR V6 (ECT OFF). Just spent the weekend up in the Texas Hill Country with my wife. Truck ran great and handled well on and off the road. I did notice roughly around 900 miles the MPG go up gradually from 16.4 to 18.4. Not sure if that is due to the "breaking in" of the truck or my driving. With that said the photo represents a mix of HWY and City

I am also about 500 miles in 4X4 LTD DCSB...at first fill up truck read 16.9 and I calculated 17.6. All flat land as I live in Louisiana. I am hoping this gets better, as I felt I was doing mostly highway miles, but there was also the time where I was playing and testing rather than normal driving. EPA rating: 18 city, 20 combined

I'm on my 4th tank sort of (I'll explain) and have come across a few bizarre things. The truck is a 4x2 ACLB with tow package. 1st tank was about 22 mpg 2nd tank was almost 24 3rd tank was going to test with ETC on the whole tank but that got shot out the window when I forgot to turn it on each time I start the truck. Anyways. So by now I've run a few of the same runs numerous times and know about the mpg it should show when I turn the key off. So I made a stop at lowes got a couple things and headed to friends. When I left there and headed home the engine and shifting and the mpg shown were different. Felt like I had ETC on but it was clearly off. Next morning took the son to school and again the truck was acting different and the mpg which usually are 23 on the school run was at 20. Then it hit me I had an 80lb bag of quickcrete and 60lb bag of pea gravel in the bed. Which. To me should not have made a big deal. I removed the bags and when I made the s hook run to pick up my son. The truck was back to running like normal. I would hope that it wouldn't consider 140lbs in the bed a significant load. So to try something random I needed to fill up but only put in 10 gallons. The drive from work usually shows 24-25 mpg when I get home. About a 60 mile drive mix of highway and city. But today with just adding the half a tank I got 26.4... My driving hasn't changed in years. All I'm saying is I have no idea what Toyota has done in the programming of the truck but I would suggest to anyone to change up some of the variables in driving or excess weight etc etc to see if you get any changes like I did.

Hmmm. Interesting. Added weight might be enough to kick it out of that Atkinson cycle and into the power cycle. Which means... People adding a shell are gonna have a nasty surprise perhaps!

So the 2016's do make better mileage but ONLY if the load on the engine is low enough to get u into the Atkinson cycle.... But if you add things like aggressive heavy large off road tires, armor, etc etc etc.... It might make a HUGE difference in economy on the 3.5 versus the 4.0 because the 4.0 is one cycle and fairly "linear" but the 3.5 suddenly isn't even getting into its gas-sip mode so it becomes a HUGE hit far out of line with expectations (based on our experiences with 3.4/4.0).

Spitballing here based on that info. Might account for some of the large discrepancies being seen.

Nice, not bad at all. Unfortunately I bet the overall loss of about ~2,000 feet in elevation helped you beat the EPA rating.

Edit: nevermind, that was a round trip.

Yea I'm for sure not putting a toolbox in there. I'm going keep trying different things to see if it changes anything. But I can say that I am getting good gas mileage to date overall. Better at least than what I've seen in gen2

I'm not sure how much the elevation factors in today's cars. The fact he got 22 going up and down hills is pretty good. I'm at sea level basically outside Houston tx and if I was using the truck as the daily commuter I would be getting over 24 mpg.

The first thing I did was get rid of the stock tires for 265/70/16 coopers. The drive from the dealers is the same as from where I work and I didn't notice a big change in the mpg.

It was round trip. Both elevation loss & gain.

Super interesting observations though. Curious to see that explored
