I agree, but for me I don't put the miles on like I used to so I maybe able to convince myself.
Plus I'm not convinced 2016 Tacoma owners won't be driving rental Yaris's for 6 months in a few years while waiting for new frames like the 1st gen owners did, and now the 2nd gen owners are.
I truly hope it's not the case, but I thought the same when I bought my 2nd gen to replace my 1996.

I can't believe anyone would buy something with leaf spring suspension in this day and age. It should be airbag. Toyota is losing 10 kazillion customers because of this.

It should have independent rear suspension too.

If they would have just put solid axles on the drivers side and independent on the passenger they would have solved the taco lean.

I test drove a Chevy Colorado Crew cab short box today....Toyota's new design forced me to revisit the Colorado.... I just cannot get use to the out of proportion flimsy looking front-end/grille. Some days I thing I am use to it and start to like it, other days I just can't stand it....a person shouldn't have to feel that way about the truck they drive. Anyway, with the Colorado looking really sharp, imho, and the engine numbers being better, the Z71 package actually being slightly less than the OR Tacoma...I figured I would drive it again. Today I feel like unless you are a hardcore off-roader, Chevy did better with the midsize truck than Toyota did this time around.

btw, for some reason the Canyon doesn't feel as good as the Colorado to me.

It's the "perceived reliability" Toyota earned itself in the 80s & 90s. However, I don't think it's warranted any longer and was exaggerated to begin with.

While your points may be valid and certainly well taken, I too like the Colorado. It is a good looking well built machine. Still, in the end I highly doubt it will retain anywhere near the resale value that the Tacoma retains. This may be fine if one intends to keep it forever, but for others resale value is critically important. I'm thinking about what I will sell my new Tacoma for before I even buy it. The 16' will be my 9th one, all brand new. and I've done well with every single one of them.

I'm more interesting in what TruckTrend has to say about the Tacoma. You know....actual truck people and not car people.

its because of that reputation, people expect it to be reliable. and thats why toyota stands behind their product. i.e. replacing those frames from 10+ year old trucks, the recalls, warranty extensions...

people who drive toyotas and hondas get mad when their car has 150k miles on it, and the engine is leaking or burning oil, or their wheel bearing is going bad or their struts are worn and noisy.

The most reliable way to judge reliability is by publications like Consumer reports which receives no advertisement. Toyota perceived reliability is well deserved. Anyone who doesn't think so is in denial. Denial that is not shared by Toyota's own competitors.

Resale IS real as Toyota uses a 72% residual for 2016 leases. That is very real. Reliability is based on the history of the Tacoma. Toyota is serious about QDR and I believe the 72% residual takes that into consideration. When Toyota becomes aware of a reliability issue they issue a recall. You won't find GM issuing recalls for anything but what they HAVE to when or IF they finally are forced to admit there is a safety issue.

I can speak to GM as I had a couple of their "halo" cars and they were issue prone with well known problems.

But worse than that is comparing GM Service to Toyota around here. The Toyota service center is fresh and new and very much like Lexus. The GM service here is conducted out of 50 year old buildings. No room and far too many vehicles ahead of you in the Que.

GM took four full page adds in that issues including the Cover fold out....Toyota bought one. Follow the money when it comes to Advertised media magazines. I don't bother reading the subjective stuff only the Specs. They will never convince me any GM is better than a Toyota product in any way shape or form.
I am definitely a fanboy of Tacoma. Toyota replaced both head gaskets on an 80K mile Tacoma I had because they admitted there may have been some marginal gasket material in certain VINS. In fact they issued a recall for any V6s under 120K........GM has never and would never do that.
