Maybe I missed it, but why didn't you notice the rust BEFORE you bought it or signed for it??

    Not sure I follow.

It certainly has issues. It definitely isn't falling apart at any minute. Frame isn't full of holes and falling apart. It's a used truck in a salt market. While it sucks and some parts and pieces don't look like they're in good shape, I don't see anything with a gigantic flashing danger sign.

Certainly nothing to call a news agency about. Unfortunately you fucked up and bought without having an independent inspection, and worse, trusted a salesman. If you have recourse through their customer service or contracts then by all means pursue it, but so far as I can tell it's an unfortunate situation, as opposed to a imminent danger to life and limb situation some are making it out to be.

Correct me if I am wrong.

You obviously didn't take it too seriously, waiting 2 weeks to have it looked at. I hate to go against the grain like normal, here.. but seems more like buyer remorse than dealer tricks.

I feel like you saw it, blew it off as okay by your own opinion and the salesman's opinion and now that you're invested into a minor money pit you're getting cold feet and changed your mind. Maybe I'm way off or maybe you had a serious case of "I want it, this drives great. It's a little rusty but not a big deal," and it clouded your best judgements.

Hi Thomas Jefferson. Seems like the rust could be more problematic than the OP was led to believe by CarMax. I just don't know if he would have bought the truck had he been told by CarMax the full extent of the rust problem. Now it sounds like he's upside down on the deal and can't resell the truck quite as easily as CarMax did. Nor should he have to resell. If he discloses the true nature of the rust damage he would have to sell it at a discount. If he didn't disclose the rust issue he would be misleading the buyer of his truck. I wonder if CarMax was aware of the rust issue when they bought and or sold this vehicle and did they price the vehicle accordingly. Anybody like to make book on this?

Try living in the NEK. I've seen 13s and 14s with way more rust than that. I get how you feel, it sucks. But really I wish my frame looked like that. The previous owner of mine had the frame in my truck replaced in June 2013. This is how it looked a month ago before I cleaned it up and POR15ed it. I'm not concerned about mine even being that bad, it's so common to see rust out here that unless it's REALLY bad no one blinks an eye at it (In the VT and NH area at least). I railed on it as hard as I could with a ball peen every 6 inches and it was perfectly fine. Granted I'm still covered until 2018 if it rots out. So I guess you don't have that piece of mind of being able to get it replaced, (yet).

i hope it never gets that bad, but im sure they would start replacing frames on 09+ if need be. I dont think they would do all the other years and then say fuck you to everyone else.

I'm sure they'll start replacing the newer ones soon enough. Just sucks that such a great truck drivetrain wise gets stuck on some bullshit excuse for a frame.

Years ago, disreputable southern used car dealers would travel to the northeast and by "salty" used vehicles by the semi truck car hauler load, at a significant discount, and resell them to unsuspecting buyers by telling them the car was, "a real peach". They never mentioned the rust problem, or downplayed it if the customer mentioned it. These cars looked great, so they sold quickly, and back to the northeast the shady used car dealer would go for more product. Point is, this situation is nothing new, and it's still just as dishonest.

This x1000. NE cars sell for dirt compared to everywhere else because they're about to turn to dust underneath where most people don't bother to look. I sold an 01 rav4 with holes in the unibody everywhere and rotting strut towers to a dealer in Boston for $2k. I put it on CL and sold it in less than 12 hours for my asking price. He drove from Boston to get the damn thing. Saw it on Boston CL 2 weeks later for 7k.

That still goes on. Dealer auto auctions are the shadiest shit shows this side of Wall Street. Every time there are floods the market is full of water damaged vehicles. Same thing with salted Tacos.

Steelhd, I just hope OP can get out of this and not get screwed by CarMax. He should at least have gotten kissed first.

If I were in OP's shoes, I'd contact every CarMax representative until one would take action with my case. The only thing I'm not understanding is the fact that you didn't take it in when they offered that check. Even if they didn't pursue action immediately, least it would've been on record that you took action. Your truck will be fine as long as the body shop removes all of the rust that is planned to be undercoated. Considering the shop is "reputable", I wouldn't worry. Inquire about pictures of the process if you really want to see what was performed.

Yeah I knocked the scale off. Wasn't too bad really. Wasn't exactly happy my 2 year old frame was scaling. But it could be a lot worse. Could be driving a Jeep.

I did notice it and brought it up to the salesman. He brought out a manager and he assured me it would be fine.

I've checked all the rust throughout and banged on all of the scales. There isn't any integrity issues as the frame and other rusted parts and everything is solid.

Everything is certainly just surface, my main issue is with knowing that cleaning it up and then getting it coated will solve the issue at hand???

Sounds like you may have dodged a bullet, Erivmai. Especially if your mechanic and CarMax say everything is solid. Maybe keep a close watch on the truck and sell it, even at a discount, as soon as it's not upside down. CarMax may take it on trade in. OTOH, with proper maintenance re: the rust/salt it could be a keeper for a good while. Never had to deal with salted roads, so I just don't know. Good luck.

If it's done correctly, yes, it should solve the problem as long as you keep up with maintenance afterwards.
