Keep those oil changes going for the 4.0 6cylinder. We had the same engine in our 2004 four-runner that my wife got the oil changed whenever she felt like!! I would see it go 7-8k routinely. We had to trade it in with only 107000 miles and burning oil like crazy!!!!!!

X2 on that. I do all the maintenance on both cars, I put gas in both cars (I keep a log) - maybe I'm OCD, or I just want to make sure that my things last a long time.

Haha gas too, now that is some OCD. I do the maintenance on both my and my girlfriends vehicle as well. She also subscribes to the whenever I get around to an oil change is when it gets one rule. Blows my mind that she is willing to have that attitude with a $25,000 machine so I took it over.

Tacoma is stock and staying that way, Pickup is TBA as of now.
Something else must have gone wrong with it, that's not really overextending an oil change at all to be honest.. Synthetics can definitely do that plus more if you get the extended mileage stuff and even a quality dino oil can go that far as well. The old 3k OCI is completely obsolete in this day and age, it has been since the late 80's. Oil today is much better than it was 30 years ago, and that's why cars are lasting on average of 300k vs. the old 100k lifespan. If you run quality oil and oil filters, you can easily extend oil changes by double of 3k intervals. Quicky lube shops and dealerships want people to believe 3k oil changes are necessary so you put more money in their pockets.

Nah, just poor maintenance. It had rust in places that were a direct result of not taking two minutes to run it through a car wash!!
Thankfully her land cruiser 100 handles abuse and neglect much better!!

The truck that is the subject of this thread has regularly gone 10-12k miles and even occasional 14k miles for oil change intervals using Mobil 1 EP 5W30 synthetic and burns no oil. Truck has had Mobil 1 in it since the first day at 60 miles on the odometer. Over 397k miles now.

My 05 has 225,500. Tired of replacing wheel bearings, alternator was a pita...shocks & struts weren't too bad & a new driveshaft bc the joint snapped leaving a toll booth & twisted the yokes. New frame last may. It's a work truck & I plow with it as well. Mobil 1 is my friend
