Well, no pics so maybe this didnt happen..... Only pics are of fight and bent rod. Worth sharing anyhow

Honestly, the most epic fishing experience I’ve ever had a pleasure of being a part of, that says quite a bit, I've put in some time.
Everything was right, I had just tied on a killer jet head blue marlin jig, hand made in Hawaii. Put that on my brand new Avet Pro 50 and Custom Super Seeker all roller 6’3” XXXH. Perfect setup for such a scenario.

We left the 371 area (local baja ca. bank) where we got the limits Dodos (all over 15lbs) heading to the 390 high spot, closer to the 390 we had 2 marauders out and they both got hit a couple times, nothing stuck but the marks on the marauders made it pretty clear who/hoo was the responsible party.
Right as we got to the 390 high spot we hear the clicker on the big rod go off, nobody home. Watched the jig, it gets hit again, massive mound of water pushing up below it, quick buzz and missed again. Third try, now it’s pissed, charging from behind like a diesel train, half the fish out of the water, hammers the jig, still didn’t stick. The fourth try you could almost feel the anger, the fish came out of the water almost completely and wanted that jig dead, this time it stuck, were on………I told Pon to grab the rod, he was up to bat, I have a marlin checked off my list, it was his turn. (Pon is one of our welders). It buzzed off about 400 yards almost immediately, some jumping and grey-hounding off in the distance, we could tell it was big but really hard to tell at such distance. Fight went on for a while, backed it down, chased it down, used the boat as much as we could. We finally got another good jump out of it about 50 ft from the boat, absolute monster, that’s when we really knew it was special. Got it to the leader a few times which is a legal catch but not the end, this is Pon’s first marlin and the first on the Parker, he wants it in the boat, or at least tied to the side.

We finally got it tired out enough that we were gonna give it a shot, next to the boat, Justin on the leader,(Justin is our welder/organizer/go-to guy) 2 gaffs ready, a tail wrap hoop anchored to the boat……. I gaff the shoulder, another gaff goes in the tail end, he was not ready, tore one gaff out of his shoulder and the other right out of Pon’s hands. We knew we were gonna need to tire him out some more. We continued pressuring him and going back and forth giving and taking back 200 yards at a time. We finally were about to take another shot at it, right next to the boat, fish darts under the boat, Pon leans out to try to keep the line clear of the hull, slips just a little, rod on the rail and it acts like a pole vault, up and over he goes. Happened so fast putting it in free spool never even came to his mind, he was immediately pulled right into the side of the boat and had to let the rod go to stop from being dragged under…..end of story

We got beat, period, everything was right, just flat out got beat, not sure what we could have done different, our lack of experience with this level of fish became evident in the end. I have gained a whole new level of respect for the guys that fish these monsters, I now completely understand the allure of Marlin fishing and have a strong grasp on the danger that comes with it.

We did try to get a ballpark measurement based on the boat length when we had him next to the boat, we estimate the snout to the fork to be appx 12ft, weight in the 500lb range, I don’t fish marlin a lot, certainly not blues, so my estimates on weight could be a bit off, the length is probably pretty accurate.

What a story, wish you guys could've landed the fish. And bummer about losing your gear but at least everyone was safe at the end of the day

Killed it on some sharks today. We couldn't even keep the poles on the water fish on all day long! Everything we pulled in was over 4'

Dropped the lobster nets out of Dana Point, CA at 12:00 AM on Oct.3rd. Pulled up over 100 shorts, 2 octopus and 3 eels in about 2 hours. Only got 13 legals.
Anyone else go out for the lobster season opener? how'd you do?
