Hello, i have a 2014 tacoma with about 28k on it. The dealer has offered me an extended toyota care plan to take me to 40k worth of maintenance for about 375 bucks. Thats roughly the 30k, 35k and 40k services for 375.00. Is that a good deal? Or should i just take my truck to a local service shop and let them do the services ? This is the first new vehicle i have ever owned so i just want to make sure i do whats best for the truck.

    Thanks

    Big Al

    Hi Al. Welcome.
Members here have different opinions about that, and my guess is that most will steer you away from it. Most guys here work on their own trucks, so they save the money there. If you are going to have the work done somewhere else, it is a matter of doing the math. I had a similar offer on my wife's car and adding it all up it was actually a little cheaper to do the plan than to pay for the services individually when they come up.
However, here is the catch... They offer it to you when your warranty is about to expire, because they know a lot of people go away from the dealer and get the oil changes done elsewhere. If you pre-pay for the plan, you have to come back to them, and then they start telling you that you need this-or-that also that is not included in the plan. That way they keep you as a customer for a longer time, and make more money off of you.

open up your maintenance manual and see what it includes.
is it just oil and oil filter changes along with air filters?

    You can do that yourself.

If the maintanance manual calls out for differential oil changes, spark plug changes, etc make sure they include that in the deal. if so, it might be worth it.

more than likely, the fine print will only say oil changes and oil filters

You'll only get oil changes and a tire rotation. You will not get any major service done. I had been dumb and bought that on my 2010 and when the bigger service of the 30,000 came they said " Oh this only covers oil changes and rotation of tires and nothing else. Don't fall for it. I mean the OEM Cabin filterand OEM Air filter are I think supposed to be changed out at the 15,000 mile service. But yet I have talked to a few people and nobody has got this done. So again that additional service is just oil changes and tire rotations. Take it somewhere else.

Thanks for the responses everyone i really appreciate it. I will pull out the manual and see what they offer. Great idea to go in and ask if they will do all of the details mentioned in the manual i bet they will say no and then like you i will say no.

    Thanks again

    I'll echo what Unchained said.
When I bought my truck, I did opt for the extended Toyota Care only because I'm getting old (please don't flame me).
The F&I had a dealer specific print out for my model truck. (not the lil brochure of Toyota Motor Corp).
It stated all what would be included at each mileage intervals beyond the free 3/25 Toyota one.
    It was nicely laminated.
I made a copy of that damn print out.
Fast forward to my 30k service. Service Writer was like nope no spark plug change
I pulled out the paper. Plugs got changed, along with all the filters etc.
Asked for the old ones back just to keep things honest.
So yes get it in writing....unless you can wrench it yourself or pay someone else.

I have a 2014 around the same mileage as yours and went in a couple weeks ago to ask about Toyota Care Plus. They made it sound great until I asked about spark plugs and differential fluid changes. Nope, not covered. Only oil changes and air/cabin filters. So, I bought 6 spark plugs for 20 bucks and walked out.

I just called the dealer where i purchased the car in Albany NY. I asked to talk to the service manager who told me that every detail noted and listed in the manual is what will be completed on my vehicle for the 30, 35, 40 and 45k service intervals. He said he will sell me the package for 299 plus tax. That breaks down to about 75 bucks a service. I didnt buy it just yet but thinking thats not such a bad deal.

If that's true good for you. Me I would never trust them enough to actually do the work. But like noted get it all in writing so there is no loop holes that can get you on.

Not sure if this is the right thread for this but i also was considering black rims and tires on the truck. You guy's know the best place online to shop, tirerack or ebay ? I can start a new thread if needed just thought i would throw it out there.

Do like that guy above posted. Get it all listed out on paper and get it laminated. They will sell and tell you whatever you want to hear, and then do the opposite. As far as wheels go post it in the tire and wheel section and ask all the specific stuff.

Man if they will do all of those major services for $299 then I would say thats a pretty good deal, especially if you don't feel comfortable doing it yourself. The quote for the spark plug service alone was $300 at the dealership near me.
