It seems there is a lot of talk of perceived power with the new 3.5L. It also seems that the perception varies greatly between Auto's and Manuals. Lets see if that holds true with a simple poll that should show the percentage of Auto/Manual drivers that either think power is above or below their expectations. Maybe this will help potential buyers make up their mind on which tranny to get.

I think it has to do more with what vehicle they were driving before.

I agree with this although they still came to the Tacoma with some perception of how it would feel. Maybe this will die a slow death as a "failed poll", but lets see.

I have no issues with the power band. It suits the way I drive. I don't accelerate hard from stops or accelerate into stops. I have not had to stomp on the truck so I really don't know if I will feel the extra 40 ponies or so. It feels like it can get there though.

I gave up a 15 for the 16 and I like the 16's way of sipping gas when light on the pedal. The 4.0 used a lot of fuel at all phases of driving, It did not seem to matter whether one had a light foot or not. It was not going to be an economical drive,

My current truck is a 2013 Ram 1500 Crew with the Hemi, 8 speed tranny, and 3.92 gears. Needless to say it has a lot of power, but the 16 Tacoma felt like it had plenty of power during my 30 minute test drive that included back roads along with a little freeway. It's no Hemi, but plenty adequate imo...

I drive a 12 year old 1.8 NA 4 cylinder. How will the new engine feel?

My experience only involves a fairly extended test drive but I felt the power was adequate and I currently drive a 2011.75 E90 M3 with the DCT and competition package. This is a car that is capable of sub 4.0 second 0-60.

Maybe that's because I was expecting it to top out at about 35 mph after reading some things on this forum.

I would assume pretty nice, with plenty of power. But maybe expectations are variable.

Debating or giving opinions on how a vehicle feels/drives is kind of meaningless. Everyone has different ideas of what feels good or bad. Go test drive one and decide for yourself.

On second thought, fuck all that. Toyota fucking sucks and the Tacoma is a piece of shit that drives like a pig's turd. I changed my poll answer.

You might as well say discussing the looks, options, mods, sound, and performance of the truck is meaningless because everyone has different ideas on all of those as well. That pretty much rules out every thread.

Debating may be meaningless, although opinions are important. Sure each person will have a different perception of what was expected, but it does give people some idea of impressions. And, if it is anything like here every truck that comes in is already sold so test driving can be an issue. Especially if you are looking for a manual.

0-60mph tests are reasonable measures of performance that can be compared against other vehicles as a "yard stick" so to speak. The tacomas 0-60 of +8 sec is a touch on the slower side by todays standards, but its not "terrible". Another measure of engine performance would be 40-60 and or 60-80, etc... for "passing speed".

Some vehicles are geared to perform better at speed than from a stop. My current car is a 2.0 turbo, and it feels faster at passing speeds than from a stop. Also, the throttle response sounds similar to the tacoma in that its mild at partial throttle, but with higher rpms comes sigificantly more power. In my car, this is in part to being a turbo, but it has to do with fuel mapping for better mpgs too.

I actually dont mind it that way because i have the option to get mpg by being easy on it, or i can spice it up by putting the pedal down.
