For those of you who put custom wheels on your truck, what did you do about the TPMS? Is it direct or indirect.

Just made deal for my 2016 and considering changing wheels. Thanks.

I did the same, dealer quoted me about $200 bucks to swap all tires and move the TPMS system
to the new(my current) wheels but said there could be an issue. Curious to hear what everyone
else had to do or not do.

We have aftermarket sensors that work with any kind of wheel. The have regular valve stems and the sensor adjusts to fit the wheel unlike Toyota solid stem.

Installed Cooper At/3's (265/70R16) and ProComp 7089 Rims. Tinted front windows. Did the Fog Light Anytime mod. Did the tailgate mod. Added running boards. Adding sound Deadening from RAAMaudio. Replacing stock speakers with Polk Audio DB6501's.
My tire shop took the sensors out of the stock rims and put them into the new, no charge. I then sold the stock rims without the sensors. $200 to do this sounds like a rip-off to me. I'd hunt around for someone else.

Not sure how they are specifically on this truck, but I have changed them a few times and they were always banded on. You need a banding tool (band-it --expensive if you don't have access to one) and the right size/grade bands and it is a simple matter. Just mark the location and number the sensors in case they need to be kept track of individually.

If they aren't like this, I can't help. I have heard of people gluing/epoxy them on, but then if you need to swap later... though I imagine today's double sided foam tape would probably hold perfectly well.

I would think this would be a courtesy at many shops since it is so common, or a minimal charge ( like $5-10/tire max), so definitely look around.

Just spoke to dealer.service. They said TPMS is located in valve stem. (Direct system). You can put stems in new wheels from the stock ones. Dealer price for another set of stems is approximately $160ea. Or.... you can just leave them in stock rims and deal with the idiot light staying on.

My dealer quoted me @ $899 if they needed to get new ones for the new wheels & tires, that price
included the 4 tire swap from existing taco to new taco.

You can swap the sensors to the new wheels if they fit. The angle of the sensor might not fit some a/m wheels. Some models have different sensors for steel and aluminum wheels due to the angle of the sensor.
ive heard of people using a pvc tube or throwing them all in the spare to keep the light off but the new Tacoma needs to see rotation of the sensor to determine location of sensors

That's crazy. I watched them change mine, 2 min/tire (max). I didn't buy the rims from them, but did the tires (which were originally put on the stock rims). When I had the rims changed, I paid $5/wheel to change tpms, mount tire and balance (and at first they weren't going to charge me).

I guess it pays to stay with a local tire shop for 35 years.

$200 is usually the price of new TPMS sensors.

that's the same price discount. tire. direct and tire. rack charges.

really hate that ad engine, keeps adding a url to an fleabay story every time I use DTD or the rack name in a post.

Toyota has done it this way in the Tacoma since 2006.
The electrical tape works well unless your state inspection includes checking the tpms.
I run to sets of tires/wheels for winter/summer.
I make sure my inspection falls when the sensors are on the truck.
The pipe bomb/wheel barrel tire option is/was really popular.
Also cutting it with an inline fuse. That worked with certain model years.
Yes, I get it though, safety, but its a money maker for sure.
One tire shop wouldn't install my winter set because of no sensors, some "law".
I was like driving with crummy tires is more safe than because the rim has a sensor?
The small garage down the street put the darn wheels on for me no problem.

$160 each is if I decide to buy another set of them for the new wheels. Not sure if you understood that.

keep sensors and put them in the new wheels. You shouldnt need to pair them again with the tpms system.
TPMS at the dealership is a rip off. If you get new tires at costco, they will swap for free. Even pair for free.
