I need/want to build a bench in my garage (single car) but also want to be able to park a car inside if need be, so I'm left with a no bench option, or some kind of folding setup.

Anybody have any ideas or websites that may show some designs for a wall mounted bench top, or some kind of similar idea that doesn't take up a fixed amount of space unless it's in use?

Building is fine and it's cheaper (presumably). Casters may be an option.. stowable space being the limiting factor but that may be enough bench to suffice and certainly be stronger than something affixed to the wall that is foldable.

I wanted to do something like that in my previous garage since it had very little edge space, but never got around to it before we moved. Now I have plenty of work space with both cars parked inside. Just need to organize it to my liking, which the new metal pegboard helps a lot.

If it's just a car, you could just build it high enough that the car tucks under it. Just couldn't have a middle brace.

Most versatile solution IMO is a couple 3' folding aluminum sawhorses and a solid core door for a top . This also gives you the ability to set up a work area wherever you have a project and the sawhorses can be used for other projects

I buy Dickie's work pants and shorts...pretty much all I have now. I keep a couple pair that are not used for work but are for when my wife wants me to look presentable. I always get the ones with reinforced knees and the cell phone pocket on the side. Very comfy pants.

Will measure when the car is parked inside and see what available space there is for a rolling bench. I'm favoring that concept since I could build storage into it and that's part of the ideal setup.

Comfortable working height for standing is about 40 inches, so I may end up with 2 4x4s for legs, tied together top and bottom with 2x4s and lockable casters on the legs. I would run supports underneath the bench top as well. What would be a good, solid choice for a bench top that isn't total overkill either in composition or expense?

Also bench height depends on what you're doing on it . If you are going to have a chop saw on it for instance , you would want it a bit lower than 40"

Or if any of your local lumberyards has a door hanging shop , they usually have seconds or fuck ups

    Mainly fiddling around.. :)

For that kind of stuff I'll put it on the saw on the ground. This is mainly for tinkering and having a surface for disassembly and reassembly type thing, and hand tool/fastener storage.

Solid core door looks like a perfect idea.

Looked on CL for a door without success, but found this bench which is pretty much what I had in mind, minus locking casters.
