oh yeah I usually toss I think 3 bags of sand in the back of my truck also and use 4WD as needed. I will say that Cooper AT3 might be the worst tire ive owned for snow though, the stock dunlops were better. Goodyears when I wear these out

Check the TireRack tests on AT tires in snow. There is no reason now to have poor performing AT tires in snow. Some are just as good as snow tires in snow ( not on ice) and the Firestone AT is reasonably priced and good to superior in all areas.

Maybe not the worst but they are horrible in wet lake effect snow.
I was going by a friends recommendation and I got them for cost so lesson learned? I was going to do with duratracs or wranglers but thought I'd try these. Underwhelmed, know what will be next though

Built prerunners with All terrain tires and weight in the bed are more capable in the snow than stock 4x4s.

There is not much out there for heavy wet snow. I use dedicated snow tires and the heavy stuff still plugs them some. You're right. They are a compromise tire.

More capable in snow then 4x4...... Well, if the 4 wd has the same tires and weight, you ain't going where a 4 wd is. Light snow, sure. Heavy snow, 6-12 and hills ? 4 wd will have to tow you up your not starting in deep snow on a hill from a stop like 4 wd.you are right, if the 4 x4 is stock...but it is still about the tires and 4x4 actually uses all of them where2 wd does not for starting off.i know people like to say 2 wd is better then 4 wd then they put these less capable conditons like inferior tires and poor balance. Compare apples to apples and 4 wd wins hands down.

A stock 4x4 has sucky tires. Some larger duratracs on a lifted prerunner would be a lot more traction. Adding weight in the bed keeps the rear nice and stable. Idk my prerunner was very capable.

Dead serious/ There was a huge thread on here somewhere about how a built prerunner is better in the snow than a 4x4

I live in northern NH so the winters can get bad, I have been using this Shurtrax for 3 winters now and with the set of ruggid tires this what you need. What I like about the Shurtrax is that I can still use my bed and there isn’t a chance the rocks/sand will get all over the bed. All you do is fill it full of water, the winter will freeze it and give you an extra 300lbs in your bed.

That's pretty cool but don't know if Id want it in my car. Guess it works in the trucks but uses valuble storage space.

"Better in snow" is a bold statement and encompasses a lot of situations. For example, regardless of how superior your tires are, in deep snow , starting up hill, even an all season 4 wd will start off easier. In deep wet snow, you have to push the unpowered front end which becomes impossible for two wheel drive.
Again, if you want to handicap the 4 wd with the worse tires in the world, you have a point. If you equip them equally, the 4 wd is vastly superior in all snow conditons. That is just the way life works. 4 power legs are better then two. I hope you don't believe half of what some of these flatlanders say about 2 wd vs 4 wd. throw some hills in there and snow, two drive is at a huge disadvantage no matter what you do...except praying.

I may test that theory this winter. Run the newish KM2's in 2WD only, and the almost new at20's in 4WD and see if I can make it into and out of my neighborhood alive. Wish me luck.

It doesn’t take up that much room, it stays put at the bottom of the bed. If you are going to put gravel/rocks/sand in your bed this is a space saver. I used to use bags of gravel but then one would rip open and get all over my indoor garage and the wife would get pissed about the mess. With this glorified bladder system I fill it up in the fall and empty it in the spring and it just water so it goes right down the drain in the spring, no mess the wife is happy, hence I’m happy haha

4wd may have hurt me this last year because it was a sharp almost uturn on a hillside and I was going very slow and the road was covered in a thick sheet of ice. The truck just went sideways and started sliding sideways down the hill. The 4wd may have actually caused the tires to loose traction on that sharp turn.
