LED Interior Lights

Appreciate the post. Just ordered the same set. Was lamenting the interior brightness last night.

 

In that case it's my misunderstanding and I apologize. To be clear, this is just a random outdoor lightin bulb I had laying around, but I would be happy to run the test for someone if they wanted. My apologies again.

Hey No Problem .... I only speak English and obviously I am NOT good at it .... I just think it is cool that you actually work at a place that can measure these outputs. With that in mind, I have ordered the cool whites for my Taco. In your humble opinion do you have some preferences between the cool whites, natural and other types of LEDs? I would like the box light to really show the contents of the box better at night. Would perhaps choosing a different light option like Natural make a big difference in seeing the inside of the box or maybe there is a specific range that certain LEDs shine good at? Sorry for the questions, but would be cool to understand what choices to make. If I can't get the box light brighter, I will put some LEDs around the inside track on each side of the box.

 

JHFMX, I find your testing gear to be incredibly cool (no sarcasm, I assure you). In a month or so, after I get my truck and change out the incandesents for LED's, I'd love to send you every OEM bulb that I replaced.

NoDak, I also much prefer Natural White, if you are referring to 'Daylight' or '5000k' color.

well base on superbrite leds, soft white is usually 6k color temp. too bluish for me.

I prefer closer to 5k which for them is natural white. If I remember correctly most lexus/toyota HID/LED color temps are around 4300k

high noon sunlight is 5500k if I remember correctly.

 

Thanks guys. It's a very cool job I have where I get to use it every day for testing. I definitely feel lucky to have access. Just let me know and we can figure all that out once yours come in, or maybe I'll pop mine out and test. I'm sure they used the same bulbs on all the 2016 models. Different manufacturers label their CTs variously. For example out "natural" ct is actually very warm at 2700k . It looks identical to why you'd see with incandescent or halogen. With LEDs I always prefer warmer. The cooler you go, the closer it is to natural daylight. 5000 -6000k is that range. I always think hospital lighting. It's all personal preference at color temps but usually the higher the ct the better efficiency. Wattage really doesn't matter in this case when we are talking truck parts. Lifetime is the most important thing along with lumen output. They are probably (just a guess) 40,000 hour bulbs give or take, so then you're looking at lumen values. That one is a bit tougher to explain. Most people know this better by wattage because they grew up using wattage to signify how bright bulbs are. That's not the case with LEDs or really any light, but with incandescent a and halogens it was a direct correlation. The cool thing (no pun) about LED technology is that they use less wattage (power consumption) to produce the same amount or more light (measured in lumens). All of this info is usually listed;however, there's no good standard for keeping people accurate. Spheres can be calibrated differently etc. Sorry for the overload of info. I'm trying to keep it brief. Another piece of data found in my test results is the CRI (color rendering index) value. This tells you how well the light emitted produces the actual colors. It's important in landscape lighting, but not so much with interior truck lighting. All these factors should be considered when using LEDs, but in this case personal preference will win every time. If all else fails go by what looks good. I want to know the values for my own personal knowledge because i would definitely consider installing them in my own truck. I thought offering up a test would kill two birds hope that's clear for everyone. If you have questions I will do my best to answer

 

Btw, we don't sell any bulbs of this type. I'm not trying to sell anything nor dispute any company's data. Just curious for my own (and your) intent.

 

You're most likely far more knowledgable on the nomenclature than me. We don't deal with any automotive lighting. It even varies in our niche from company to company. We have 2200k as our warmest ct. It's known as candle light. 2700k is the standard and it's known as warm white. 3000k is also known as warm white, and 4000k is known as moonlight. It's typically used for moonlighting which is a form of downlighting large areas to make it look like all is from a single vantage point. Other companies in the industry use cool and warm exactly opposite and use words like natural and daylight, so it can get quite confusing

 

Thanks OP I ordered some for my map lights and the light in the center. But how did u get the map light bulbs out cause I took the plastic off and it's so tiny u cant get your fingers up there to put the oem bulb out.......

 

Use a thin strip of Duct tape. Clean the bulb with alcohol to get your finger oil off it. Wrap the tape around the bulb and hold the bulb with one hand while pulling on the duct tape with the other

I put VLEDS in my interior.....No glove box lighting though....Using a small LED puck

if you are going to use the duck tape, be sure to wait for the bulb and the housing to cool down. I learned it the hard way . Took me 10 min. to clean all the glue of the housing.

anyone figure out how to get the license plate lights out? do you pop them off from the top of the bumper or from underneath?

Very nice! I did a LED swapout on my Acura TL and loved the change, and first thing I noticed on the new Tacoma were the lame interior lights, so I've just ordered those replacements, thanks for posting up the part numbers, makes a man happy.

 

thanks. I tried to turn it but man is the space tight. tried to do the map lights, but I need a different tool to get them out it seems. tried the string method, that didn't work at all, just slipped right off.
