    Just a few LEDs...
Well damn. I guess they will get hot if you're pumping that much current through them.

Where did you buy them? I've been looking for some high current amber LEDs that don't overheat when operated continuously.

I retrofitted one of these to my 3rd brake light. Haven't hooked up the signal wire yet to switch to strobe but its amazingly bright and has driver circuitry built into the board. I'll take some pics tomorrow or this weekend as time permits but it was an exact fit and I retrofit a bulb socket so it plugs into the center socket of the 3rd brake light.

Used a bad LED body and fed the 16 gauge wire down through each side and then hot glued that assembly so the wires didn't shift around. Soldered onto the + and - respectively and hot glued the board assemblies together to keep them from shifting around. Through a piece of electrical tape over the one end as originally I had 2 boards put together length wise. They were 1/4" too long together. There is a signal ground on this board as well to change the strobe but I didn't wire that in yet. I've got it set to solid atm.
