I bought my 2015 earlier this year. If I were buying today I'd buy the 2016. If I were to buy late next year I'd buy the 2017. And in 2018, I'd buy an '18.....

    It's really that simple.

I walked up to a 2016 the other week and did not get that same feeling when I first walked up to a 2nd gen. The 3rd Gen is still a solid looking truck, but I just like my 2015 better.

Also, I am a part of that group that never wants to buy the 1st year of the new model vehicle. Been there a few times and always had issues.

I hate the touchscreen. I hate it hate it hate it. Thinking of converting to a single din and just putting a regular deck in there.

    I admire your simplicity, sir.

You have an excellent understanding of these trucks sir. Mine does not have a clock other than on the screen and no temp gauge. I do wish it had the temp gauge.

When you say bed cubby holes are you talking about the two in the back on either side with panels over them? My AC has those.

I moded 1999 Taco so much it had turned to Land Cruiser
I am afraid you going have to do your own homework...

And Yet..... I can't find a single thread on 1gen and 2gen forum that has multiple people complaining about low oil pressure coming on on inclines.

I know couple people who had their truck almost vertical with out oil light coming on.

No the cubbies I'm referring to look like these here seen above the wheel wells. They were on both long bed and short bed models until around 2012/13 time frame.

The 2016 is ugly, more expensive, and is not available in the configuration I want (TRD off-road, access cab, 4x4, V6, manual). Thank god I was able to find a 2015 in stock!

Also I'm hoping I can grab a supercharger for the 4.0...

Same situation here got the '15 in May vs. waiting for the '16 I really fell in love with the gen2 body style and reliability, I loved the Gen1 in high school but them gen2's got me crazy... Especially those trophy gen2 people tend to show off in this forum... Comparing both depends on individual taste and needs just like tires, lift, wheels, fab shop etc... nobody is right. Buy what you want don't look for reasons not to cause you'll find a flaw every time.

I've come to a place in life where "things" really don't matter. I'm a man who used to wash his Vette a couple times a week...his motorcycle chrome polished...kept the house immaculate...sweat the details. A true perfectionist. Now, I don't look for perfection...just excellence.

Plus...every material thing will end up in the landfill someday... :D

Hey you made the claim of "oh these many problems", not me.

New vehicle is going to have a few issues.

I think the oil light thing is going to end up being something simple and not a loss of oil pressure at all. Of course that is just a guess. None of us know, yet.

I knew I was buying a Toyota this fall and I was really on the fence about waiting for the 16 or getting a leftover. The local dealer could not provide any accurate pricing but only said they wouldn't be budging much off MSRP. I too am one who has been bitten before by buying a first year model change. One had significant issues and the other there were several changes after year 1 that I regretted not waiting for. Love the new interior updates but the exterior did not immediately win me over but it has grown on me though. In any case, I made a low offer on a 15 leftover and got it. Still had some "should I have waited" thoughts in the back of my head though. One of the dealers I had been dealing with (who I didn't buy from) called when the 16's arrived. I played along as if I hadn't yet purchased and the pricing they put in front of me worked out to roughly $8k more for a 16 limited vs the 15 limited that I bought. That certainly shelved any sense of doubt I had about my decision.

    I'm 50/50 on it.
The back 50% i like, but the front 50% is straight up ugly on the 16.

After seeing some of the problems that people are having with these first 16s I am happy I went with the 15. I have seen threads on oil pressure light and truck dying on an incline, power steering fluid leak, leaking head gasket (in the power steering leak thread, doesn't have its own), and one about the Infotainment system dying. I am sure that these problems will be worked out with time and that soon they will be "Toyota Reliable", but there are initial production issues. It isn't like there are a ton of 16s out there yet either.

Also to be fair, the problems I have read about have all been on the V6 and I would have gotten the 2.7 on either truck.

I parked next to a new '16 today and I was surprised it was still higher than me. I have 1.75" lift in front (5100s) and 1.5" lift in rear (progressive AAL).

In a little while this topic wont be an issue. I think my 01 4runner was twice the off road vehicle than my 15 taco, in fact I know it was,...But it is gone, old news, and so will the 2nd generation Taco. I've driven the 16, it did not impress me, Different drive train-1mpg better(wow)...Interior is not all that new, I liked the hand brake and AC vents, display was a tad larger, Steering wheel was the same, few other little things...All in All I think they missed the mark but if I were buying a truck this year I'd get the 16, what are you gonna get otherwise, a Chevy...

Here are a few pictures of my 1986 Tacoma I bought new back in 1986. It was fun down the pine barrons in NJ but I remember how brutal of a commuter vehicle it was. Although, back in those days there no cell phones and no GPS units. We would have to walk out to get help or ask someone to use their phone. Ha Ha!

I traded it in with only 11,000 miles on it. I had many more 4x4's over the years but I would not trade the newer smoother performance of my current Tacoma with that old truck. It was annoying that the year before mine was the last straight axle Tacoma. I got the first IFS and it still rode really rough!
