Doesn't there need to be a unanimous agreement by the Provinces for that to happen too or is that just for Senate abolition ?

I'm guessing for any federal electoral reform you would need the provinces to sign off. I think that was alluded to by the Supreme Court as well. I doubt Trudeau will actually touch it. I think the court ruling was based off the BNA act and their interpretation to what was agreed upon for our electoral system at confederation.

A good question would be can you get something done that requires the provinces without Quebec like Trudeau the first did :D.

Which requires unanimous approval from the Provinces IIRC

Isn't it just a majority of the provinces. IE you need 6 to pass a vote? Or was that just under the BNA act and the Canada act requires unanimous approval?

I'm not a religious person for the note. But as question you feel it's ok if schools, businesses etc ignore Xmas don't have any trees or Xmas cheer type stuff visible during the holidays? How about not having to sing or stand or acknowledge our Canadian anthem?

That's kind of what I'm getting at. If people choose not to believe in something that's fine it's when we change it for them and lose our identity over all these changes I do have issue with. If people here disagree guess I'm just not on same page and I don't understand what it even is to be Canadian anymore.

Christmas was never protected in any laws. I personally think the whole Merry Christmas versus Happy Holidays thing is silly. Either way I don't care, my family and mine are celebrating Christmas and will tell people "Merry Christmas". If it offends them then that's their problem.

The singing and standing for the national anthem is a sign of respect. To those who don't do it, congrats, you are officially a douchebag to the country. I hope it makes those people feel good at night because it won't ruin my free time.

I don't really care if businesses do or don't celebrate Christmas , I understand why in Government offices and schools they generally don't celebrate any religious holidays except with Stat Holidays , and I don't think it was ever a requirement to sing the anthem unless maybe you mean in school , which I remember , but I also remember being forced to recite the Lords Prayer at the same time which I don't think is correct

Sure we have I'm not saying we haven't been. But we also seem to be rolling over for any and all change requests. If you feel that's just fine guess we'll just agree to disagree.

Yeah, I'm with DD on this one. You should stand and remove your hat for the singing of the National Anthem. If you don't, that's your problem though. Be prepared to do so at your own risk though. I know at lots of hockey games not standing and removing your hat will result in either an ass kicking from a drunk or removal from your seat by the usher. It's private property after all, they don't have to let you be there.

I know if a kid refused to remove his helmet for the singing of O Canada at a game where I was the head official I would kick him, but I wouldn't write it up under a law. I'd just call it a general travesty to the game and write it up as a misconduct under trying to start a fight lol.

They still force kids to do the Lords Prayer at our local school IIRC. It's gotten them shitty national coverage a few times but my area is very religious and will never change, well not for a while.

Lol holy man I didn't mean or say had to. Rather we have been eliminating what has been for so many years because it "offends people".

It's enshrined in law, believe it or not, under the 1905 Alberta Act Ordinances 137 and 138. Any kids who don't want to do it can leave though.

Honestly, with all the negative media about it and the perception it gives off, I wish rather than hold onto their right in law they would just keep religion out of the school completely. I'm sure you could challenge the Alberta Act under the Charter of Rights and Freedoms but it would be expensive and anyone who did it would be a pariah to the local overly zealous largely religious community.

Meh, that's a social thing. Not a legal thing.

It only becomes a legal thing when people turn all zealot and decide to go against the system because their god told them too.

Thats the problem though , things like getting rid of reciting the Lords Prayer get defended as " attacks against religious freedom " when actually they mean " our particular religion " . I highly doubt the same people standing up for a teacher's religious right to wear a niqab in class lol
