It really will not matter on the heavy hauler there is no vertical load the three pieces of bar stock would be enough to hold it together .

More then likely just to add some weight to front of the tractor

I would guess the other welds are just for pretty and to keep dirt out.

Wow you put the plates on the outside rather then the inside of the coal hopper /bin around these parts we put the wear plates on the inside.

Did a few in Stainless to make things flow easier.

It is a shame some people take no pride in there work then some just don`t care.

it's 100% to add weight. I forget what the stamp on it said, but they had the front bumper weight, and then a 12.5 ton weight strapped to the flatbed. this load was only 350,000 lbs, but with our heavier loads, the truck needs some ass to maintain control at "higher speeds" on public roads, and to keep from spinning tires on the construction roads.

I would be worried about the weight of it mixed with the jarring of potholes and stuff on the road cracking the welds but I guess this is where engineers know more and better(Not sarcastic or rude BTW).

And yea we had to put em on the outside since the silos have some liner on the inside that they didn't want welding on apparently. But idk that for sure. I'm not the boss. Just a hand.

If you look at the front face of the bumper, those three circles you see are pins that go straight through all 8 inches of steel, and are welded on either side. They look like 4" round stock, so it'd be pretty hard to shear all three and break the welds before someone catches it.

There are plenty of ways to get good penetration on thick plates. That's why different weld processes exist. I've seen welding processes as high as 1500 amps, and have personally welded on 2" thick bull dozer tracks with 700 amps. A 300 amp mig welder isn't shit.

Southern Maryland, right on the Chesapeake Bay.

we built a barge trestle where all of our big or heavy loads come in. they get off-loaded from the barge and set up on the heavy haul trailers there, and then are driven ~5 miles up the road to the plant. no bridges to cross or go under, and no overhead power lines to go under, so really the biggest obstacle is just coordination with state and local police to get the 3:00 am escorts. luckily I don't have to do that. I only take charge once it's on site.

Taking a test November 30th and if I pass (bend and visual) I'll be hired at a local shipyard.
Test is going to be vertical 7018 and dualshield, bevel plates with backing strap, 1/8" gap.

If I'm hired I'll have 2 weeks of training and then I have to pass an all positions test, I believe it's dualshield and 7018 with X-Ray.

    Best of Luck !!

Seeing some of the welds at the old Philadelphia Naval Yard it is a wonder the ships don`t sink when the dry dock is flooded

I've made a few welder extension cords. Just buy a welder plug receptacle and wire it to your 6 or 8ga drop cord. You need 2 wire. So 2 hots and a ground. Don't need a neutral. I've also found that buying the 50' welder extension cord off eBay is only a few bucks more than making your own and it's durable as hell.

yea I looked at just buying one but I need two plugs for a multi-process welder and a plasma cutter so I don't have to keep switching plugs every time I need to change

Buy yourself A 100 amp sub panel mount this to your cart 2 50 amp breakers at least one or two 15 amp breakers for lights grinders etc. Feed this by a 100 amp breaker in your main panel.

I run 3 50 amp breakers off a 60 amp breaker two xmt-304 welders and my plasma cutter of course only one at a time gets used plus a 15 amp breaker for 120vac

Hardwire your welder and plasma cutter to the breakers that way your circuit protection is right there

A 50' length of 8/3 SOOW if you only plan one process at a time.

It is your project I told you a easy way .

How I did in fact do mine.

The length of you input is what ever you need.

Just curious how you would split the 8/3 into 2 50 amp plugs

Since Inverters can be very expensive when they go Kaboom!!!! and the magic smoke escapes

I also have fast blow 40 amp fuses mounted in both legs of the input cord in case any one has inverter welders repair costs could be several hundred compared to several thousand.
