My clutch constantly burns, smells a bit like burning brakes. Going to replace it in the near future, it doesn't slip yet but it really stinks after extended highway use.

My new 2015 makes a burning clutch or park brake smell when backing up. I called the Toyota service department locally here and they said it was the first they'd heard of this.

It is a four cylinder five speed. Driven stick all my life.

It really worries me. Any ideas?

    Maybe your brakes?
Sometimes when I'm hard on mine I can smell something burning.

Have the alternator checked out at a local parts store for free. Had a subaru that smelled like burnt plastic in the garage after driving it, turned out to be the alternator.

I had a similar thing , turned out to be excess grease from the u joint just behind the transmission casting out onto the exhaust shield and burning

2500 miles. Your shoes are almost fully bedded at about 500-1000, Clutch sets up pretty good at about 500-750 give or take a few, and depending on habits.

Could have lost a pad on the back. lets say a loose pad that had debonded from the shoe itself. Floating around in there,,waiting to be jammed tight when backing up. Spitball theory with experience.

Crap splashing onto a clean hot cat converter or manifold can smell like burning pad or disk as Oz mentioned.

I don't think it's clutch,,because soon after that smell arrives and hangs around for a bit, it usually fails. And you would feel the shuddery vibrations.

No one has flagged you down for towing a fog bank of stinky billowing smoke have they?. Not being a smart ass,,just curious.

I have this issue right now I have a hunch though it's the CRC coating the dealership sprayed on awhile back....... They were super sloppy with the coating and got it everywhere.... Just a thought..
