Stealership troubles / bad tires???

Hey gang- am I right to think that if the stealership has re-balanced my tires(so they say), and the vibes in the truck body/steering wheel have not changed, that it's probably an out-of-round tire? 2010 stock Prerunner, Dunlops. Some vibes in the steering wheel between 60-70 mph, but i can more feel it in the floor & pedals. The dealership is being very UN-responsive, and I've gone ahead and opened a complaint with Toyota corporate. Any thoughts? Thanks-

 

It very well could be an out of round tire. Those Dunslops may actually be the worst tire known to man.

 

I'd take it back to the dealer and be like wtf? Its a 2010 it shouldn't have issues! I'd go off on em a lil bit if I was you and tell em you want to be compensated for your time...maybe they'll hook it up with some free stuff

 

Free stuff... yeah, right! I'll just be happy if they fix the problem, but they don't seem too eager to address it. Thanks for the input, guys

It's nice to know that I was thinking in the right direction re: the out of round tire, though

 

I have an 09 with 2k miles and it's been back to the dealer 3 times for vibes over 65 mph. In the end, I was told they all ride like this. I have yet to drive another but will first chance I get. I was told I was just too sensitive to the truck ride.........!?

At this point I believe that IS just how they ride and I am just going to have to accept it....or not!

I was told the exact same thing- sounds like they've got their stories straight. Man, would I like to get ahold of a copy of that memo! Such BS, I've driven F-150's that were much smoother

I'll bet you a paycheck that if we put new wheels/tires on our trucks, they ride silky smooth

 

If I knew that new tires would fix this, I would chunk the Dunlops in a heartbeat and put something else but if you do some reseach in TW, you will find that others have tried this to no avail...!!??

I got rid of these useless tires after 1k miles. I couldn't handle the noise, poor handling in corners and sloppy feel. Upgraded to General Grabber HTS 265's and love them. Some people don't have issues but any tire can have balance problems. The difference is aftermarket tire stores will work with you with these problems to make it right, but dealers usually won't. Take a look on TireRack at the stock AT20's and form your own conclusions based on reviews.

However the dealer should absolutely provide you with AT20s with no vibes and work to resolve this if it isn't the tires. My stockers didn't have vibes so they should at least provide this. Don't approach the situation with the dealer as "my tires are bad" but instead "There are vibrations at this speed." A good dealer will want to make you happy. Good luck.

 

I had this problem when we bought our camry in 01. I took it back to the dealer (hopkinsville toyota) and they first rebalanced them, and when I brought back with the same problem. They put on a new tire, no questions asked.
I guess it depends on the dealer. If I were you and your dealer was being a jerk about it, I would take it to a different dealer, or call the dealership mgr.

 

Weird, I'm one picky SOB, and I found the stock Dunlops to not be half as bad a people on this site have said...... They are a quiet, reasonably grippy fuel efficient tire on dry pavement. Not bad on wet pavement. In the snow they seem pretty weak, but not worse than any other mileage biased tire...
As for the OP, Could be a bunch of things, I would try a differant set of rims from another Taco, and go from there...
These trucks ride a little rough, but definatly do not "vibrate".

 

I have to agree. I don't find the tires bad at all. Only in the snow and heavy mud they suck. But for nomal driving I am quite pleased with them. Very quite on the highway, smooth, great for cornering, and not bad at all in the water.

 

Bought my 09 in february with goodrich tires on it. Within a week I had all sorts of vibrations. Took it back to the dealer and they said I had excessive road force. They changed all four tires.

 

I had vibration issues from day one with my '09. My dealer also didn't want to do anything. After several times of failing at the dealer, I took the truck to another shop on my own dime for a road force balance. The truck was OK, but the shop said I had two bad tires. I took it back and finally convinced the dealer to replace the tires. They wern't to happy I took it to another shop. They replaced the tires with Mich LTX M/S. They vibrated worse than the Dunlops strait from the dealer, so back to the other shop I went. They balanced all 4 and the truck now is OK. I went back to the toyota dealer and managed to get them to pay me for both my visits to the other shop.

 

My truck has had no issues with vibrations. So according to the dealer, if all Tacoma's drove like that, then I am the one with the problem....nonsense. Dealers wonder why they lose business. I would call the 1-800 Toyota number and open a claim. Maybe Toyota will agree to pay a 3rd party tire source to fix it....

 

If I were you, I would do exactly that. Call corporate and complain that your truck rides smooth. Tell them you won't be happy unless they "fix it" so it rides like crap. It would be interesting to watch them talk out of both sides of their mouth!

I have 7500 miles on mine and I dont have any vibes at any speed. I have some fresh paved interstate here and I have to say at 70mph shes a smooth as tho she was not even moving!!! Um ok thats excluding any road bumps and then there is the sound of the tires! I agree that Donlops are not great tires, cheep and IMHO think they wont last. But maybe Toyota got a bad batch..
