my 2008 console box lid opened to the side towards the passenger side. the 2016 opens straight back and only opens to the straight up position. pain when sitting in the truck and need something out of it, open lid in way of elbow. so far that is the most annoying thing i have discovered. guess just need to get used to it or come up with a mod......

it's super annoying. I don't have a Tacoma but that's how it is in my old Matrix. after 6 years I still haven't gotten used to it.

What gets me is the lack of room in there for my .357 Mag... I could get a shorter barrel, but that's a lot of $ .... I have a 6"'er now and don't want to go to a two incher....

I feel like majority of vehicles I've driven open straight up. The Tacoma is the only one I've been in that opens sideways. It's one of those trade off things, I guess for the bigger guys they bump their elbow but on the flip side it's no longer a pain in the ass trying to hop in the passenger side real quick and get something out of the console.

Wife just got a CR-V that has a huge compartment with a nice flat top that slides open like a roll-top desk. I really like that method. I have no issue with the way my 16 opens though. Hadn't really noticed, but I don't put/take out much in the compartment.

what sucks about these is when the mechanism used to keep it shut starts to wear out, the damn thing slides open all the time. especially when you're trying to adjust and lean to the side a little.

My audi s4 opens straight back and I love it. So glad the Tacoma switched to it as well. Maybe it's just what I'm used to, but I really think it's more convenient...especially when I'm out doing shit and need to grab something from the truck, I don't have to always go in the driver side.

I can see Toyota tweaking that entire center console as the model years progress. There is so much room there for a bigger storage box and getting rid of the spaces behind the shifter.

if the lid would just open past the straight up position, think i will try to mod it somehow to open further. the top cushion is not stoping it from going further back it is the plastic part of the lid. i took out the phillips screws to see is the top cushion would come off but no luck, must be some adhesive. if anyone can figure out how to remove the lid let me know. think some of the plastic at the rear can be reduced letting the lid open farther back and will not be noticeable with the cushion top on.
