I have the original 3 emitter version. since it came out, all sorts of clones came out.

it is in the cheap chinese junk category so all bets are off on what you get with this.

but I have the first version, and almost immediately clones appeared (or is mine a clone no one knows)

    a) it's fuggin bright on max, starts on max, untwist it to kill power (anodized)
so I like that feature (no standby current when untwisted)

    b) on 300 lumens it whines a bit (cheap pwm)

    c) it drains batteries pretty quick on high. but it does light up a huge huge space

I just keep it in the kitchen if the power goes out or there
is a boogeyman about I'll grab it. otherwise I use the quark mini in the kitchen

with many smaller reflectors, you get more flood than throw

also 15000 lumens is not possible in a 9xml, 4x18650 light unless you use IMR cells

I am of the belief that the 4x18650, 3 xml is about the best combo. the three xml's
can all be driven hard and you get decent throw since the reflectors are bigger. adding more emitters yet keeping
the same 4x18650 you get diminishing returns and flatter and flatter reflectors

[also...my sky ray 3 emitter is a real measured 2186 lumens]
    ----------------
    from BLF on skyray 4x18650
    3 led you get 7.5 / 3 = 2.5 amp per emitter

    4 led = 1.9 amp per emitter

    6 led = 1.25 amp per emitter

If you look at the Cree data sheets most leds are more efficient at lower currents. This means in total more LEDs while they will have more losses (more wire, etc).

Should in theory produce more lumens in total. It certainly won’t be less. Not at this number of LEDs anyhow. Driving the emitters less hard will also produce less heat. So you’ll probably get a more stable output assuming your batteries are up to the task. that is the issue, 4x18650 pushing 9 leds...it's a stretch

So maybe he'd be better off with this one: http://www.amazon.com/SecurityIng®-...F8&qid=1445610896&sr=8-1&keywords=skyray+king

Same one you have I think.

So with a light like the skyway, you can't just put regular over the counter batteries in it ? Or is it just convenient to have rechargeables. My job supply's me with all the batts I need.

This is my EDC light. It's a Zebralight SC600 MKII that puts out 1100 lumen on high. I've beat the snot out of it, and except for the lense popping out once or twice it's held up like a champ.

I am however in the market for a light with a little better cooling. This thing gets hot if left on high for too long.

    Single 18650

almost all 'high powered' lights and devices use 3.7-4.2 volt lithium 18650's

most all these high powered led lights do

all your laptop packs use them

even Tesla cars packs are made from hundreds of individual 18650's

the lithium 3.7-4.2 volt 18650 is 'the standard' for most high powered systems

there are others of course, like the tiny 10180 or huge 26650 but li-ion 18650 is ten times as popular than any other form factor

lights that can sub 2xcr123's for 18650 are pretty useful as you can store cr123 forever they barely lose a charge

I carry a thrunite tn11 in trucky and 4 loose cr123 in the cubby

you can buy them in bulk from battery junction for less than a dollar each (titanium innovations brand)

OR in an emergency pharmacies and camera stores carry them, but they are ultra expensive if you get them in a store

so, keep an 18650 light and charge the 18650's when needed
and if you are in the boonies and deplete the 18650's, go fetch your
pile of cr123's you stashed and they will be good to go when needed

full disclosure on what I roll with:

in trucky I carry 7 lights

    -thrunite tn11 with 2xcr123, and 4 spare cr123

    -fenix e11

-some cheap plastic headlamp with 3xaaa

    -my keychain Helix Zi

-a red light built into my mini swiss army knife

-my phone has a build in led light

-a homemade 12v XML floodlight with two big clamps for the truck battery power, hard drive magnet base, and 50 feet of speaker wire.
