I don't get why so much variance in mpg per same models???? I have a trd OR 4x4 and drive like a granny just to get a best of 18.8 he 18.4 town... and I mean I am REALLY babying it right now just to see how high my mpg can get.
So much for the "significant" mpg increase and "significant" power increase that they promised in all their press conferences!!!!

 

You really can accelerate too slow and have a negative impact. I was getting 16's while babying it. Once I started to rev up a little I get 19 avg. Not sure how people are getting 23-24 cruising at 75-80. My truck seems to love 4th gear at those speeds. Almost makes me wish I would've gone MT.

 

I've noticed large differences based strictly on that 0-35 range. Get it to 55-65 depending on we're I'm at and hit cruise. I have a 4x2 ACLB with tow pack. Last tank was 23.4 mpg. I also noticed a change when I put only 140lbs of Crete/gravel in the bed. Mix it up. Try an empty truck only you and the truck. I drive mine with the Eco display on the dash at all times so I can see what it's doing under all the driving conditions. Overall I've been happy getting close to 23 and knowing that if I used it as my everyday commuter I can get over 24 most likely.

 

The variance is everybody drives different, lives in a different area/climate (hills, flat, city, hwy) and I can't imagine the stock AT tires on the OR performing as well as highway tires on the other models with respect to MPG.

 

The only reason I'm disappointed with the gas millage is because looking at the epa I expected more. Had it been more accurate then fine. Never owned a vehicle where I actually averaged below the epa rating.

 

I have DCSB OR 4X4. I probably have a max of 50lbs worth of gear and supplies in there. Can't imagine that makes such an impact. Plus I actually get worse mpgs with ect off.

 

Believe it or not I make a few of the same runs each week and of course when you turn the truck off it tells you what you just avg. So empty bed on the run usually got me 23-24. With 140lbs in the bed of the truck I could feel the trans shifting different and avg 19-20. If Toyota considers that a "load" then I'll be sure never to install a tool box lol

 

I drive a 4X2 TRD Sport in Austin, TX after 2000 miles of driving, I am getting an average of 19-20 MPG 50% city 50% Highway, Driving 65-70 on the highway.

 

So my question is for you guys that had the exact same set up in a Gen 2 and now you are in a Gen 3 driving the same route everyday. What is the mpg difference ? For example : I currently own a 2014 DCSB 4x4 TRD OR and Tow Package with 4.0 automatic. It's about 6 miles from my house to work one way. 8 stop lights or stop signs max speed limit is 35 mph. I'm consistently getting 18.1 mpg. Flat road central Illinois. If I trade for a Gen 3 with the same set up would my mpg be any better or the same ?

 

I'm over in the Houston area and my 4x2 avg a tad over 23 with about a 60/40 mix highway/city

 

Based on the early results its safe to say that it would be considerably better mpg in 16.

 

I've been doing some experiments this week going to and from work to see what my MPG is and see what effect some changes have.

My truck is a TRD Sport 4x4 DCSB with tonneau cover, roof rack and mud flaps. I am in the Hampton Roads, VA area so it is very flat except for a few bridges. My commute is 28.8 miles and almost all highway with 55 or 60 mph speed limits, so pretty much ideal conditions for gas mileage.

My first trip was with the stock Firestone Destination LE2's and driving very conservatively to maximize gas mileage I got 24.6 mpg.

Next day I switched tires to Cooper Discoverer AT3's in 265/70r17, so about an inch taller and much more aggressive tread. Again driving conservatively I got 24.2 mpg. On the way home I turned on ECT and drove without worrying about gas mileage at all and got 22.4 mpg.

Next day I took off the front air dam and again drove very conservatively and got 23.9 mpg. On the way home with ECT on and driving normally I again got 22.4mpg.

I am very pleased with the results and surprised how little effect the change in tires and front air dam removal had on the gas mileage. My 2003 Dodge Ram with Hemi averages about 16 mpg on the same commute.

 

Absolute best dissection of variables so far. Have you experimented with tire pressure at all ?

 

No, I haven't varied the pressures during the testing. The stock tires were all set pretty high from the dealer, between 35 and 38 psi. The door and manual called for 29 psi, so I lowered them all to 31 psi (29 seems really low, figured a couple higher wouldn't hurt). The Coopers are also STD load tires with the same max pressure listed on the sidewall, so I set them at 31 psi as well. They feel good and seem to be making good contact with the road.

 

22.1 for the first tank on my '16 Limited. Not computer display but actual from fill. I have been gentle on her; however it was 75/25 hwy/in-town and the hwy was 70-80 varying speeds.

Curious to see how well she does after break-in. Heading on a 500 mile trip tomorrow.

 

The next big experiment would be with/without the tonneau.

True, but I did notice my mileage improved since I first got it.
