I need to travel to lots of street addresses where there is zero cell service. A Garmin works much better than a cell phone GPS in these cases.

Google maps lets you store maps for offline for just these kinds of circumstances. Had a garmin for years, but the g-maps is just a better navigator and uses negligible data even if you aren't in offline mode. Granted, I understand the use of having a backup Garmin if you are a regular traveler, but in 99% of the cases, cellphone nav wins.

You know, I too thought google maps was a better navigator than Garmin. However, g-maps has sent me on some funky routes compared to Garmin. I like the g-maps map detail much better, but in terms of routing, I still think Garmin wins.

For the last 8+ years, I generally travel to 1-5 locations everyday than can be 100+ miles each way, often with no cell coverage. I've downloaded the surrounding maps in g-maps, but I still prefer the Garmin most of the time. Just my $.02.

Seems like a lot of dicks in here.... Too bad we cant have a Tacoma forum where people try to help others out.
For the record, I can read just fine. My truck did not come with the Navigation/Electronics manual and Toyota has ordered one for me. Said it would take anywhere between 7-10 days to receive. I had a ball game in Orlando over the weekend and needed a quick answer to my question so I asked on here.
Window sticker says 19-24 mpg too, so I guess we don't need a tread about that either. For the record, Im only averaging about 18.
No one knows everyone's reasons for asking a question. If you have nothing to comment, don't comment anything.

I had/have a number of Garmins on my motorcycles. The Nav in the Taco works well! (not perfect). Much better than the new Navs in the Rushmore Harleys!! I played with the Nav on the truck and it did everything I wanted it to do. Now to figure out how to install a pre-configured route....

And how to DISENGAGE the feature that doesn't allow you to input addresses while the truck is in drive.. And no one yell at me if its in the book... I still don't have it yet!!!!!
When we were out of town this weekend the wife tried inputting a new destination as we were driving..no go. Wont allow you do it till you pull over and put in in park. There's got to be some way to disengage that although I know its for safety, but people do have passengers sometimes who can do it.

How old are the maps that are installed from the factory? The road I live on doesn't exist on the navigation system and it us two years old....
Is there a way to update? I think the manual said you have to purchase map updates from Toyota. ..

and that's the issue with Toyota OEM nav. you cant do anything while moving. whereas my garmin I can do whatever the heck I want while moving (granted I do it via voice commands, but I also have the option of reconfiguring by screen inputs while moving).

You can use voice commands while driving to select new destinations.

What does the navigation voice sound like? Is it male or female? Are there voice options?

Thanks Tacobella. My Nav book should be in this week (for some reason it didn't ship with the truck so Toyota ordered it for me)... Guess I have a weekend of reading and playing ahead of me :)
And Desert Taco, my Nav voice is a woman. It is probably changeable as most GPS's are, but wont know till I do some reading.

You can thank lawsuits and the NHTSB for that. You can do everything with voice. That's how I do it.

Another great feature is the "destinations" app in Entune. Just say "launch destination app" while driving and you can search places by name instead of address. I used it yesterday to find an Acadamy Sports while cruising down the highway. Never touched a button. Voice recognition software has come a LONG way. I use it for almost everything this truck. Make sure to open the voice training on the truck.

If you want to see the music full screen just touch the music half and then it will go full screen. Same for the navigation side. If you touch then navigation will go full screen. You can then hit the home button to go back to split screen.

I've been trying to figure out how to make the screen stay on full screen for navigation. Even when in use it will only stay full screen for 60-90 seconds and then reverts to the split screen.
Have you found a way to make it remain full screen until you press the home button?

There's also an option somewhere to change the split screen setup. You can make it two or three panels, and can change what app shows on each panel. I changed the phone portion to show the weather on mine.
