My Toyota care ran out and I started changing my own fluids. This morning when draining my oil I found this. There was more but this is maybe 75%. Truck is 2015 with 29000 miles 4cyl. Any ideas?

Where did you find these flakes in the oil or in the filter?

Did you wash them off or fish them out? Were they floating? Are they attracted to a magnet?

They look like paint flakes to me but I don't know everything, they could also be solder/ braising over spray. Just my opinion.

No it's metal. Was at the bottom of a plastic pan. Found when I was pouring old oil in to gallon container. Picked them up with a magnet.

I'd drive to the dealership and tell them what you found. You are still within warranty. Get it documented now before your warranty runs out. You won't pay anything either way if it is nothing.

It's not even my Truck and I almost had a F-----g hart attack! You need to have the dealer look at that!

Damn dude. You know there's more in there...

Concerned would be an understatement if it were mine. I'd document the shit out of everthing. Including a visit ASAP (today) to Toyota.

I've never seen anything like that from an oil change. Strange indeed. If I were to guess it appears to be something in the line of a plating that is coming apart. One sure thing is if it is part of the engine it isn't going to last long at that rate.

I would just drive it as normal... It still has plenty of power train warranty left what is it 70K miles. The next time you change the oil make sure the container is clean and then sort through the old oil again and see what you see.

Just make sure you document the oil changes with receipts in case the engine goes south on you.

Agree and was thinking the same on the plating. I think the powertrain is 5yr/60k. That said, I'd be showing the dealer now to start building my case. I wouldn't want to be asked "why did you wait" after I showed them what I had...

I know you have a penny there for comparison of size, it would appear some of those bits wouldn't even make it out of the drain hole.

There are magnetic drain plugs available. While the general consensus among builders and folks that do oil analysis is that 'if you have magnetic particulate it's already too late', I would.............

    1) Install a magnetic plug. Just to see if other bits gather.

    2) send a sample of oil off to Blackstone labs for analysis. They'll send you a test kit to collect the sample with.

when you have the results, which should be quick, then hit up the dealer, and include the analysis in the documentation.

If your Toyota care has just expired, was the Toyota dealership changing the oil while it was still being "protected" by Toyota care? It would make sense that you've had debris contaminating your oil in previous oils changes (although they probably did not screen or sift your old oil and certainly didn't use a magnet).
On a prior vehicle, I had a magnetic oil drain plug so I could check for metal filings when I changed the oil. I have no idea if Toyota/aftermarket sells such a device.

Yeah I saved debris, filter, and oil. I am taking all of it to the dealership Monday morning first thing. They were changing my oil but I don't have to much faith in them after I caught them in a lie about rotating my tires.
