i hear you..... A .22 is a succesful foundation to shoot from in skill development in smaller weapons. There are enough calibers out there for her to work up from there. Just going to a range, grabbing guns and seeing which is comfortable to shoot may work in theory, but seldom works in practice for a person lacking both strength and desire to try with anything but an easy caliber. I did this with my wife; starting with a .22 and She feels comfortable now with a 101 shooting +p and a 9 mm compact. She had no desire to shoot them initially and according to her, had no interest initially in them. Guns are mechanical devices like tools and it takes time to grow from one to another.

Well, we work with lots of women, and from my experience, .380 isn't the best option. But neither is .22. Sure, starting with a .22 for a few range sessions can get them comfortable, but I don't recommend it as the first platform to own and carry/keep at home for safety. Just personal preference. My wife is tiny, and letting her shoot several calibers and getting familiar with them was key, she went straight to a 9mm and did well, after a few times out with my 1911, she did even better. Weight really isn't a factor when you are talking about a range gun that sees a couple magazines a day.

Nothing wrong with doing what works best for you. I just like to give my experiences and opinion. 9mm in the right platform is more than manageable for most. Even a .38 would be a good option.

either way, let her feel comfortable and don't be pushy. Worst thing one can do is start being aggressive or demanding and they can clam up and get scared. Take it slow, and if you feel .22 is best, don't listen to us that disagree.

Revolvers are great for some...and idiot proof...but not for everyone and carry v

He said it's just for plinking and having fun...so if it's just so she can join him on range days and have fun a 22 will be more than fine

    @outdoorAZ

Browning Buckmark or Ruger Mark III or some iteration of either of these would be a quality range plinking toy

whatever floats your goat, also knowing the spring info helps. Hell, several of my guns are tougher to work than other, mainly .380. The safety on my BG .380 sucks! After 4 years it is still a cunt to work. I try to keep my wife away from it.

I have both, I prefer the BG overal and sold my LCP for the BG, I kept her BG because I can manipulate it better than her. I also have a holster dedicated for it so no need for safety sometimes unless it's in my pocket. It's winter so I swap out to the larger guns.

Hell, I hate purse carry and advocate against it, but my wife is small like I said and she hates wearing a holster, so I let her carry the purse. She's comfortable so I go along with it. We both carry so I try not to lose sleep over it, and she rarely goes out without me.

that and the weight. I try to give a general reply now, "just try several out and go from there" Too many fanboys to weed through when replying online. I do believe in trying several. I still think a Glock 19 is a great option though. I've went through so many guns, and Glock always sticks around. Although it takes a seat when I have the 1911.

It has been brought up over and over, but with them doing so well with just the single gun they produce, they do well. I think anything else would be a fail.

My mother-in-law is tiny, and carries a Ruger LCR .357 (loaded with .38) in a holster purse. She's lethal with that thing, likes the weight, and is just as accurate with my father-in-law's S&W J-frame. No worries about weight, it's really accurate, and while she can't rack the slides on my semi autos she can manage the trigger pull on that Ruger.

What cracks me up is that she loves shooting the semis on range days, but loves her Ruger more.

Well, judging by the large amount of 22 firearms and ammo being made and sold, there must be a lot of well armed kids out there.

I only have 7 22lrs and have room for more. They easily get 5K rounds through them a year. Maybe I'm just young at heart.

    I hear you..."we both carry......."
My wife doesn't. She shoots and works up to what we have, because we have those guns in the house and knows, if I'm not around, she may need to. We live well into the woods with no immediate help. She wants me to carry, but does not want the responsibility herself.

It's her perogative because she cooks much better then I. Because she is more comfortable with wheel guns, that is what I carry...we both have to be comfortable with it and both have to be able to drive each other's car and work the same weapons. When I carried a G26, she had no interest in becoming proficient with it. So, I carry an air weight Smith instead which she will practice with.

you didn't fully read and understand what I wrote did you? I own 3 .22 firearms, I don't use one for conceal carry or to practice with. They are fun to shoot at the range, and make really quiet fun! Other than that, it's what I start young family members and friend's children on.

Again, personal preference, don't read too far into!

not a thing wrong with that. Being comfortable is key.

I am no expert, I don't do this for a living. I am just a very enthusiastic hobbyist.

I love 1911's and I love Glocks. I spent a lot of years with a 1911 on my belt line. The last 4 or 5 years a Glock has been in my duty rig on my belt line. Every now and then a 1911 seems to be hanging from my belt line - a day, a few days, or months later a Glock seems a get back to the party. When I run s Glock I have a couple/few on me. When I run a 1911 I have a couple/few on me.

I continue to buy both and I make excuses for more purchases.

this^, over the years I have owned 6-7 Glocks, and my very first hand gun was a G23, that I still have today. It's 10 years old in two months.

I like several firearms. One day I will own that CZ Rami I've always wanted.

Glocks are "designed for military and tactical " use. If you can find a military buyer in his world who wants a weapon on the 1911 platform, maybe they will. To me, a Glock always sucked to look at and was a pleasure to shoot. We trained doing tactical work at night and there are just some guns that feel good when the lights go out.
A Smith model 19 and a Glock....and the funny thing....almost any Glock. The one thing a Glock did was wean me off safeties. I will not own a hand gun with them now.
