Some shops will do just the hood. The problem is the paint match has to be spot on or you will be able to tell, by blending in with the surrounding panels you won't be able to tell. On a brand new truck I would look to do just the hood as well.

I also have a skewp hood in black primer. If a shop tells me they cant paint it to match the panels then they are not a shop good enough to paint my truck. There is no valid reason to paint the entire front end.

    There is a valid reason.
There is no reason to be shocked. Let me explain to you both how the process works. When you come in to a shop, we don't call Toyota and buy a pint of paint from their million gallon master batch of whatever color you car is (which still wouldn't guarantee a perfect match), it is custom blended. I go to a computer and enter the paint code and am given a recipe in grams for each tint color to come up with the final expected color. I put a cup on a scale and start pouring from my rack of master color bases, tints and metal flakes (which also vary in size and color) for metallic colors. I pour x amount of grams of base, then x amount of grams of each tint until I'm done. One drop more or less of any will cause a variance in how the final color will look. Not only that, but I don't know what brand of paint the manufacturer used - PPG?, 3M?, Sikens?, and even if I know Toyota uses brand x, what if my shop uses brand y? Then there is how I set my gun to shoot the paint and then how I shoot. And my gun is not exactly the same as what was used to originally shoot the car at the factory. Then there is my personal technique, from how far away I shoot to how I overlap my passes and how fast or slow I move. Oh and let's not forget age and fading to account for. The variables are almost endless. Ultimately, yes, a new panel could be painted without blending the surrounding panels without blending. I will shoot a test flop and compare it to the car, and do that again and again until I'm satisfied that it is a perfect match, but you're paying me (the shop) for time and materials to do that. Blending is generally the best way to make sure it looks good and you're happy. Good luck op.

    No mods whatsoever!
Bring your truck to the paint shop and have them match the paint chip to your existing hood in natural light. They wanted to blend mine also, but I didn't want it. They buffed the nose and it's pretty damn close to the hood.

I know a thing or two about having your hood painted op. just paint the hood alone. you don't have to have anything blended at all if you don't want to. regardless, the paint will be a shade or two off so just expect that, there is nothing they can do to make it perfectly perfect. the good news is that there are sharp near 90 degree bends and curves where the hood meets the fenders, and I have loads of pics before and after mine and I honestly don't see a difference cause my color looks different shades from different angles and times of the day BEFORE I had the paintwork done. id suggest not blending, cause that just shifts the paint shade problem to the side of your truck.

that shop basically just wants you to spend more $$. just do the hood bro. if they wont do what you want, find another shop.

Why do you care? I've seen your car in person and the paint doesn't match at all. Probably doesn't help that you continually clear it off with a hockey stick either...

Lack of painting skills is not a valid reason and lack of skill is all it comes down to. Why have Americans become so accepting of shit work?

Sorry, I didn't realize you're a professional painter and have all the answers. Didn't mean to bore you with the truth.
