Torque, no low end toque. Posted this months and months ago. Everyone said the technology will give it torque. No technology is going to make a NA engine of smaller displacement make the same or better torque than a larger displacement engine. Where are all the idiots that kept telling me it's going to be more powerful down low in the rev range? Shifting, that's what their doing.

I'm referring to when I'm traveling at speeds of 70-80mph. It is constantly shifting into 5th, running at high rpm, and dropping fuel economy. My wife has a Bmw 8 speed, that rarely does this at hwy speed.

Personally, I wouLd like the HP of a standard gas engine. Once you get to 300 lb ft of torque, everything else is gravy. The object is to shit and git as cheap as possible. But, VW engineers should be able to help with that premium diesel too.

It's the transmission, not the engine. When we traded in our 2011 RAV for a 2015 RAV (same engine) I could not believe what a dog it was compared to the older one. All for the sake of a couple of mpg. We are seeing the same thing with Tacoma

I bet it's the air resistance at that speed.....a car will not feel the drag of a truck. If your truck did not down shift, it would lug....the computer is always looking for an efficient way of going 80 mph in a brick and comes up with this as a conclusion for a truck made for off road...there is none ! Your gas mileage will drop at 80 mph.

The solution is simple......put the transmission in s mode , shift to 5, and drive around that way at 70 mph. Everyone wants 30 mpg going 80 mpg with a gas engine in a truck with 9.3 inches of ground clearance, all for $25k....now some compare it to a BMW. BMW can't make cars/trucks that do that for $25k.

I have a little over 3000 miles on mine now. The engine feels sluggish up until half throttle and then it comes to life. I think this torque curve was specifically designed to help mileage as the 6 speed auto transmission helps compensate for the lack of low range power. I have had a ton of vehicles, and I am coming from a Ford Explorer with a V8. The constant shifting of the transmission from 4 to 5 to 6 to 5 to 6 to 5 to 4 to 5 to 6 etc on the highway at 75mph was driving me bonkers. When we had the New owner invite dinner at the dealership they had all the managers/an owner and a Toyota Engineer that they invited to answer any of our questions. When the time came I DEFINITELY jumped up to ask my question on the low end torque and the insane shifting. He explained part of the power band and the low power coupled with the constant shifting is all normal for this type of configuration setup. I told him, I felt like I was riding a horse sometimes. He explained a ton more things, but with my big square head I only understood about 15% of what he said. The Atkinson cycle variable timing, comes into play sometimes and blah blah and the transmission shifts many times as it is designed to give a closer range and better fuel/power mileage as opposed to other transmissions blah blah. What I took from my conversation is that the transmission is absolutely fine shifting a billion times and not to worry and with a little time I will get used to shifting, and my fuel mileage should increase. Highway driving I am getting 16 - 18 mpg with the OR model. When I need the power, I push harder on the pedal and I have NO problems getting up to speed when getting onto the highway from an off ramp or getting up and passing someone on the highway. It is just DIFFERENT NOT to have the low end power immediately when pushing the throttle pedal towards the floor. So with that said I LOVE my Taco, and I will learn to accept over time that it operates differently from other vehicles; I have NOT had any problems/hiccups at all with it ...... so VERY HAPPY!

I went from f350 crew cab diesel to a Tacoma in 08 when gas/diesel shot up to 5 bucks a gallon. That was a big change and chance I took and it paid off. love the truck and double cab long bed trd sport was just big enough for me. Now I don't want to go back to full size, but if f**king chevy can put 300 horse in there truck ( and Toyota knew that long ago ) tell me why Toyota didn't. My truck is pretty big and long, it weighs over 2 tons so yah the days of 160hp 4 bangers and 236hp v6 don't cut it anymore. I want it and willing to pay for it so f**king build it.

Shit chief....16-18mpg highway is not bueno. I get between 17.5-18.5mpg in my '99 V6 TRD 4x4 MT with 32" tires, and that includes ~25% city.

Yup. So do I. I thought part of the reason for the changes in power train in the new Tacoma was better MPG?!? If it ain't broke don't fix it, and the 4.0 wasn't broke.
