What have you done to your Tacoma today? 1st Gen Edition

For the 4x4 guys???? So I cut the bottom of my shifter plate open for the TCase. As for the rubber part how should I cut it? Should I slice a small slit or cut a hole. I just don't want to cut out more then I need to.

 

Id go to a junk yard and just buy a 4wd one man. Be way simpler.

 

I cut the part that's got the outline of the circle, the dirty looking part. You could just cut a small X and be good also

 

yuk. I'm in the middle of a front end rebuild myself. it seems like one thing wrong can trash something else.

 

No transportation when the junk yards are open. So I have to work with what I have sometimes. Plus I need to save pennies somewhere.

Just how hard is it to turn a prerunner into a 4wd? I think that would be a great investment for anyone wanting a double cab but can't afford a good 4wd dc. That is, if the benefits outweigh the cost.

 

depends on how cheap you can find the parts really.

 

If you found all the parts at slightly less than retail from the dealership and you did the work yourself what would you say the average cost would be at that point?

 

Paying someone to do the 4wd conversion will be a lot of money.

Good luck with the install if your doing it your self. I can see that being a big pain.

 

You're not going to want to go retail at all. Used parts is the only way to go to make it worth it. Buying new will be more expensive than just selling the 2wd and buying a 4wd.

 

Yeah i just dont know if i should just suck it up and replace them or see if the shop will help me out because that definately wasn't from normal wear and tear or something i did.

 

A lot, used is the way to go I only have like $1800 in mine and that includes all new fluids and misc fluids and bolts

 

Right now just for the avarage Joe conversion. My ECU was 100, then a new wiring harnes 150, tranny was 700, TCase I think 250, front Diff was 200. Front spindles where 130 for the set. Also have to consider shipping. But you still have to get drive shafts, axles and any other little things that can be forgotten. I haven't gotten that far yet.

But for me I also am putting my long travel on and doing a 3.4 swap. So there is a lot more parts to buy. My truck is stock everything so ball joint, tie rods, steering rack bushings and a lot more of neglected parts are also being replaced. For me I love my truck and it's worth it to me to do the work. I considered buying another DC first gen. But it's cheaper doing it this way in the long run.

EDIT: Yes like everyone else said junk yard parts are the way to go. New or refurbished parts will be close to buying another truck. All my parts only have 117,000 miles on them. Its all about research.
