I asked because I bought a '06 Tacoma recently, having driven Chevy and Ford fullsizes for the last 50 years. My last Ford was a 7.3 Turbo with lots of power. This Tacoma is nice but won't pull the hat off my head going uphill here in the Rockies. Heard about the Supercharger and thought "Why NOT!?" Then was shocked to find out Toyota quit offering them - "WHY!?" Got on the web and saw a few offered at $4500.00 - not bad but saw one supposedly "new" offered on E-bay for $2500, but needs a "fit-kit". This is all new to me, so I'm doing a quick search to see if I can locate a source for "fit-kits", so that I can maybe go after this one. I have E-mailed URD, but so far not got a response - -

I'd wait for Magnuson to start producing them again. Should be more reasonably priced.

I saw that the company (Magnuson?) that made them for Toyota is going to start producing the whole unit again maybe by the end of this year. Thatis okay. I want to get it done during this winter. Still, I've had a couple of heart attacks over the past 10 years (7 bypass and stints), so I don't count "tomorrows" until each sun comes up! ;) Thus, I am kinda antsy about getting it done as soon as possible so I can drive it a bit! :)

I appreciate the info I got here. I was going to jump into the E-bay market to get one, but you've convinced me to be a bit more patient and cautious. After doing a bit more homework, I'm realizing I probably would have regretted buying something quick, then not being able to get it installed - and probably losing bue cue money in the process. thanks for being patient with the old guy! Here is a picture from today's romp (if it will post) to cast off with - -

Those ecu's report a flash change, or update. Which leaves a new code from factory.

Excluding the BD, the UCON makes no changes to the factory ecu's files. Nor do wire in units for that matter. Except for their obvious physical tampering. The UCON just send signals for the OEM ecu to be "happy" while actually controlling the engine.

Also, the program writer for the UCON was an engineer for Ford who wrote their tuning software. There are similarities between softwares between the two. He is the same engineer who wrote the program for the APR X-1.

It cannot tell that the UCON was there, nor will there be physical evidence.

Good to know. I don't think it would be hard though for an ECU to receive programming that would allow it to distinguish that it has been dummied. I've been told that Ford does leave some sort of tamper detection software on their Diesels even if they are flashed back, but who knows if it can detect that it's being fed fake information. Probably not. It's not a concern of mine since I won't be tampering with my Ford but at some point I'd like to run the UCON. At that point I won't care about warranty anyways.

I do understand that a lot of tunes for the big three directly rewrite or flash code to the ECU instead of use a pass through like the UCON does.

My point was that, simply, the market URD is tapping into isn't the exact same market that the TRD S/C had. Are there people that would consider both systems? You bet. There were plenty of people though who wouldn't go URD though because of the loss of warranty. The people who go URD don't have the same concerns when it comes to if they blow a motor, to be frank, because quite often they will be pushing the safety thresholds anyways and warranty is their last concern.

URD just needs to hurry it's ass up and get the UCON released this winter as somewhat promised!

I listed a 3D printer in their XRU thread some time ago. That would have drastically cut production times. Versus the standard tooling, molding, production processes. However it was done they have the last connector now. Just need to get them all connected to the boards.

I'm sorry... I want to make sure I am understanding this correctly. Someone has finally made some of the ecu plugs for the 09+? I bought a Maf calibrator from URD but wont install it till the spring most likely. If this is an option by then I would rather plug in a UCON or something similar.

How easy is the UCON to tune?

My wifes best friends new boy toy, yeah I know that's quite the thing to follow, has been hanging out with me lately and I just learned he's a mechanic with tons of experience tuning high end motors. He's pushing close to 280 WHP out of a Cobolt SS just for fun as his daily driver. I only found out when he asked me for the wifi one day when he went to show me something on his laptop and a tuner type program came up when his computer awoke.

Is the UCON easy to tune with 3rd party software? I'm clueless when it comes to this stuff, but if he can tune the UCON with me it makes it go from an option I want to something I need lol.

The UCON is extremely easy. Since the owner is limited to the "lite" version. This way it is setup to have the main programmer do the tuning. Whereas the owner pretty much is limited to datalogging.

The idea behind this is that it prevents the owners from improperly tuning their engines and destroying them.

URD can remotely tune your UCON, if your laptop is attached to it.

For the most part, there are a set number of mods which people do. Through communication, they determine which file to give you, based on a specific set of parameters.

    Very easy stuff.

It is an adaptive tuning ems. Simplified, it tunes itself. Within a specific range.

When the owner decides to move beyond that range, they'd communicate with URD and say effectively this," I'm at the approximate power level. I'm about to make these changes and am aiming for this power level. Which parts do I need to upgrade (if any), and will I need a new tune?"

For simple bolt-ons, your power level won't likely change enough to require larger injectors or a different map, unless you make a fairly large change. Such as going from N/A to F/I.

As well as going from cats to No cats.

Then again, that is relative to how much hp the injectors can handle before they are at max duty cycle. Or if a larger fuel pump is necessary.

The data is there for what changes need to be made, backed up by the datalogging feature of the UCON. It can even point to a fuel filter being to clogged, based on the increase of fuel necessary to meet a specified target AFR.

I have the TRD injectors and the URD fuel pump kit is sitting in my garage. I'm not chasing insane power or torque, but once I've swapped out my y-pipe and put a snorkel on I'd like to maximize what I have to the point I can.

You don't have the TRD injectors installed with the s/c?

Is that because you didn't want the reflash?

Whoops. Sorry, I have terrible grammar. The TRD injectors are installed. A dealer did the install. I just have to find a weekend with a buddy to install the fuel pump.

Anyone ever find a fit kit or a list of places to go to get the majority of the parts?
