Finally got around the installing the axle shims today- I have a URGENT question- skinny side of the shims to the front? And since I have 1.5" lifting blocks does the shim go under the block (between axle pad and block) or on top of the block ( between block and leaf springs) ???? Or does it even matter? Any help would be greatly appreciated- thanks!

Make sure your centre pin head extends far enough through the shim to positively engage the block

Thanks, I got them in. Put the carrier bearing back to its OE position and drove the truck. It literally drives like it did the day I drove it off the lot! Not a single vibration! Thanks again to those that chimed in!

im new here... what is the driveline vibration people are talking about and what does the shim really do?
I have a 2.5" lift in the front with 1.5" blocks in the rear and feel a slight thump and kind of vibration when I take off from a stop and then it goes away... is this what we are talking about?

and to be clear I have a 2006 prerunner double cab.. so the feel is coming from the rear

You're stacking the lift block & shim? Bad idea......

You should find a lift block with the 'angle' built in and thus only have ONE piece of material (block) between the spring & spring pad on the axle.

so what I am reading is that putting in a "rectangular" 1.5" lift block in will change the angle of the rear axle and drive shaft causing vibration and wear of the u joint? correct?
If I were to remove the lift block and put in Dakar springs that will lift the rear end, would I still need shims?

A lift in general -no matter how (blocks, springs, shackles etc) - can & will change the driveshaft angle. Whether you get driveshaft vibrations is an unknown until after you drive it.

The higher the lift, the more likely you are going to have driveline vibrations.

    Agreed...

Highlighted: you have axle wrap.. (don't worry, it's not as bad as syphillis):p

Good chance you would, you've only changed HOW lift was attained, not the amount, anytime you lift (or lower) you change the drive line angle in relation to the pinion/flange & the drive shaft/Ujoint & sometimes some funny things happen like vibrations, this is generally corrected by way of carrier bearing drop or in this case using shims...

So is there an easy way to figure out what degree shims would be best to start with ?

The general rule is one degree per inch lift. General rules don't always hold true, but in general...

Let's not get all scientific here. We like to throw money at problems on TW, not figure out how to solve them using math and science. Those are separate, right...

If the combo being discussed works, can the all steel shim be welded to the block?

Great point. I have some shims in the mail and if they cure the shudder then I planned on welding block and shim together, but good tip on short weld technique.
