Maybe just open a "battery cleaning shop". Five a day and you'd be doing pretty good. Low start up costs. Baking soda and a brush. Am I missing anything?

I'm just a country guy, farmer. I keep my stuff serviced. I changed my plugs in my '98 Tacoma at 167,000, changed again at -------. Well I don't know has 360,000 on it now. It's still wearing the 2nd set.

I never knew there was a correct way to hook/unhook the battery. Anyone I've ever watched just unhooked/hooked up whichever their hands got to first.

    Thanks for the tip :)

If your terminals are corroded. Then you most likely the battery is already out gassing at that post. This will kill the battery eventually.

Cleaning the post will help but since the battery is gassing around that post the corrosion will return shortly. A dielectric greese on that post and the clamp will prolong corrosion build up.

This is what a corroded neg cable looks like. Did not cause any problems. This is the original battery. Happened after the most recent oil change. So within the last 5000 miles.I took the cable off and cleaned it with baking soda and water. Gave it a light coat of dielectric grease. The blue/green doughnut hasn't returned. Probably the beginning of the end though.image.jpg

$55 = hit it with a wire brush and blow it off. They actually tried to charge you for that?

A mixture of baking soda and water will neutralize the acid.

You might as well replace the battery. You don't want battery acid leaking around the battery. My 27F battery did that at 3 years and it destroyed the paint under the battery mount.

If it were mine, I'd remove the battery from the vehicle and clean it "outside" of the vehicle. Both posts. Clean both cable ends that are inside the vehicle. Here's what a battery brush used to do this looks like. It twists apart.

I do all my own service. Once a year I take it to my dealer to have them do a check (they never find any issues) for any future warranty issues, if any ever come up. Last time the tech sprayed Flexi-Film on my battery posts ! I know that is what he used because I got some for lubing my hinges and latches when I do my services. I was choked since my engine bay looks like new because I keep it that way. I will be mentioning this next time I take it in for the 1/2 hour check. Took me longer to clean the battery and overspray than the check took !!
