Totally agree with all of this. I always thought Tacomas were great looking trucks, but the interiors were AFG. (First word Absolute, last word Garbage)...as such I never even considered buying one, I always went full sized. With the 3rd gen they finally got it right, you don't have to be embarrassed to have people see the inside of your vehicle anymore. They weren't quite 2011 Challenger-interior-bad.....but they were close.

FUCK. I just bought a Prius and the piece of shit can't tow my 3000lb tent trailer.

Guys, ya'll bought a truck...sure The other guys are getting better MPG but by how much? I for one didn't even consider gas mileage when I got my Tacoma because I didn't buy it because the gas mileage was stellar. I bought it because I wanted a truck to do truck things. Gas mileage was secondary to me. If I was buying a full size truck to pull a fifth wheel I wouldn't be looking at the Tundra I'd be looking at something with a diesel. Again not because of gas mileage but because diesels have gobs of torque. My Tacoma is the slowest 0-60 vehicle I've owned but none of the cars I've owned do what my truck can do.

Are those of you who want a truck with gobs of power and stellar gas mileage crazy. No, but it's just not realistic, yet. Even the twins fuel economy isn't 'that' much better then the Tacoma. Well, not enough in my opinion to have pushed me towards them.

Is the interior on the 2gen Taco dated compared to a 2016? To some it is. I personally don't like the interior on a lot of the new Toyota cars and trucks because they've all gone to the 'shelf' look for the dashboard etc whereas I like a centre divider between the pass and driver.

I like the interior of my moms Highlander better then the new one because he car has the centre break that I like between passenger and driver. The new Highlander dash setup is hideous to me. So much so that I got a 2014 Santa Fe because I liked the interior setup better.

Looks are subjective. I like natural boobs and junk in my wife's trunk. My brother likes silicone chests and the bigger the better. I draw the line at a nice set of Cs maybe a small D. Gravity is a bitch.

You just said it, "the other guys are getting better mpgs." I guess the better question would be, why don't you want better? A 1/4 ton truck like the Toyota is capable of getting INSANE mpg, if some money is put into R&D, like the manufacturers of the full sizes. Problem is, Toyota doesn't want to spend the money, and they don't have to, because people like you don't question or demand better results.

The Santa Fe was a piece of shit btw and although it's frustrating for those who are dealing with stalling issues and low oil pressure of trade those issues for the issues I had with my Hyundai.

I don't know what to say brother. When I get my Turbo Porsche I won't expect it to get the gas mileage of a Carolla. How much better can 'we' really do with 1/4 ton trucks and at what cost to reliability? Hybrids, Atkins system, Honda shuts down X number of cylinders to save fuel? I don't have an answer but I do know that the more you screw with something and the more complicated you make it, the more chances we all have for reliability and for some with the 3rd Gen, drivability issues. I'll be the first to say that it's almost more difficult to learn how to properly drive an auto then a manual. I would purposely go out with my Santa Fe in all traffic conditions to 'learn' how the transmission worked. From a rolling stop I would blip the throttle a little to prevent it from down shifting and making for a rodeo like ride.

Are we being realistic in our expectations?

One of my friends has an F-150 with the Eco-Boost and is very happy with both the economy and the power (carpenter, roofer guy). For me, I wanted to be able to fit it in the garage during big storms (along with a van and motorcycle)...also wanted a manual transmission. A couple of MPG was not so much to me, especially as it was thousands cheaper. I'll never be able to drive far enough to make up the mpg difference.

Same here. In fact, the same holds true for the added cost of diesel equipped vehicles. For the most part, unless driving a ridiculous amount of miles all the time, the cost savings in some cases take a decade to realize.

The grass is always greener. We complain about paying $1.16/L for gas but we have no issue with paying $2 or more for a 16oz coffee.

When you say "demand better results", how does one accomplish that? Realistically, who is going to sit down and write a letter to Toyota explaining their concerns over mpg's? I for one don't have the time nor motivation to do so. It would take thousands of individuals for Toyota to even consider making drastic changes.

It would take a big drop in sales and complaints to the dealers. They listen to lost sales. But, if the gen3 sells like the gen2 or better. That is what you get.

This is the first rush of a) people just getting into their first Tacoma/midsized truck b) guys that are Tacoma fanatics moving into the newest and greatest (opinions vary), hence MSRP and ridiculous prices/availability, etc.

Give it a year or so and compare sales to years before of 2nd gen, what skews the numbers is GM is not a good competitor for Toyota's QDR and in terms of current twins vs. 3rd gen so people looking to get a midsized truck will likely pick the Tacoma, hopefully ford jumps in to bring something of better competition to the market. And there is no way to measure the lost sales for the Toyota/Taco guys who are disappointed in new truck and will eventually move into a full size (me for one) for their next truck.

Toyota gets that new mid size trucks could take sales away from the full size and decrease market share, so market share is not as important as actual volume of sales.
